The Oakland Police Department currently has 715 officers on staff, Allison told CNN.

Barry Donelan, president of the Oakland Police Officers’ Association, said the union believes the number of officers in the city should be closer to 1,200, based on the volume of calls and the size of the population.

Oakland doesn’t need more police officers, it needs more air horns!

That ought to protect residents from vicious criminals, right?

How is that “defund the police” YOU voted for working out?

Oakland? The number of officers there should be 5000 at least.

Then they’d howl about a police state.

> police have advised residents to use air horns to alert neighbors to intruders <

Just wait until some Karen blasts her horn due to some innocent black guy walking in the neighborhood (maybe he’s a DoorDash delivery guy, or whatever).

Then so much for that program.

People are getting stick of what the DemocRats are bringing them but there is a cognitive dissonance between their voting habits and the state of their cities.

To paraphrase an old saying, “Voting for DemocRats time after time and expecting a different outcome is the definition of stupidity.”

A few decades ago, I had a satellite office in Oakland. I became an absolute expert at not going there, it's amazing the number of meetings I skipped or attended via phone.

My reason? Personal safety. Of course, crime has gotten much worse. Much, much worse.

And for the notion that...

... homicides are down 14% in the last year...

I simply do not believe it. REPORTED homicides might be down, but blue cities are pretty clever when it comes to under reporting violent crime. Ask any LEO.

I'd love to be wrong on this btw.

Air horns are meant to scare animals. Are they saying criminals are “animals”? Hmm.

Using an air horn might make some criminals say “hmm, this person’s unarmed, and if I’m quick enough…”

I find that in Utah a 44Mag works better than an air horn.

Air horns from the victims will only protect the neighbors as they run to hide under their beds.

I think homicides may actually be going down while all other crimes are going way up...

The numbers to look at is the percentage of homicides that are solved tracked over time.

With modern tracking tech (vehicles, cell phones) and DNA the vast majority of homicides can be solved if police departments focus substantial resources on solving them.

That would deter murders—but of course have no effect on other crime where the police don’t dedicate (or have) the resources to make full use of modern tech.

The air horns let the police know to stay away from active crime scenes.

“Go home safe” is their first priority, ya know...

A lot of times homicides aren’t down, as bodies are hard to ignore. But lots of other violent crime gets underreported.

In my experience, the sound of a .45 is plenty enough notice that something bad is going on in my neighborhood.
