State governments have historically generated revenue to maintain roads, traffic lights, and the like by adding a tax at the pump. Owing to the federal government-prodded transition to electric vehicles (EVs) to combat something called “climate change,” states stand to lose out on this source of revenue as EVs obviously don’t require gasoline to operate.
Utah’s novel solution is to charge a “per-mile fee” for EVs with a government GPS tracker attached to monitor movement.
Via the Utah Department of Transportation:
"Utah roads are maintained using taxes from gasoline sales. As vehicles become more fuel efficient and the number of electric vehicles grows, the Utah Department of Transportation and Division of Motor Vehicles is changing to a per-mile fee as a way for drivers to pay their portion of roadway operations and maintenance… You will pay 1.00 cents per mile, deducted from the prepaid wallet, up to the amount of the flat fee. Enrolling in Utah’s Road Usage Charge program gives you access to DriveSync® for Utah DOT an app that makes your driving safer and more productive through trip tracking and driving reports."

“Just disconnect the antenna”
Until the fine for having a non working antenna is 10X what your tax would have been?
What then?
Remember folks - the leftists and RINOs used a generic “right to privacy” to claim the constitution demanded death of unborn babies as a “right”. Pretty sick stuff. Yet when something like this clearly and obviously by any reasonable standard violates actual, written rights in the constitution, they see no “right to privacy”. They lie and twist and distort and confuse because their father is the father of lies.
Texas is just going with a flat tax. They set it too low, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Former RINO Representative G W MORON supporting turncoat Ray Lahood, who served as demon obama’s transportation secretary first floated the per mile tax / government vehicle tracking.
His son is now the representaive of his daddy’s former district. He also calls himself a republican.
Oh look. Now EVs will be even MORE popular. LOL.
The party is over, Pal! EV mileage tracker and tax plus we (Oregon) are adding a marijuana surcharge tax to help out our struggling legal marijuana growers.
Wait till the EV owners find out that they have to pay for their own EV mileage tracker and legally approved installation. I figure $500 at least.
And then discover that the factory warranty on the car is voided by the installation.
If I was stupid enough t buy an EV, I would welcome the tax. I will spend so much time charging the vehicle, I’ll probably only drive 5,000 miles per year. .....I can handle 50 bucks per year. That’s only about 4 Starbucks coffees.
Off course the government is going to allow me offset credits for the cost of electricity to charge the car? Right? We’re saving the planet.....right?
They are using EVs to open up what they hope will be universal for all motor vechiles - setting state fees and taxes by tracked mileage; requiring mileage tracking of all vehicles.
The EV fad is almost over. I’m the manager of a new Ford dealership and the inquiries on EV’s were pretty hot last year, this year they have basically fell to zero. Last year the Lightnings were selling at a huge premium, now you can buy one for any dealer you want for invoice less $500!
We need some means of taxing EVs for their share of the cost of maintaining the roads and related expenses. Hope they can find a way that does not invade privacy.
What then?
How can you tell your antenna is no longer working? Will the police have a detector that can detect this? Can they prove you knew it was not working? (Crappy manufacturing installed a defective wire, the wire separated and we can't tell.)
Next year we will export the vehicles to Ukraine to use as land mines.
;-)
Thanks. I wonder how I screwed up my link. I thought I had just copied and pasted. Oh well.
Exactly, “Ve Shall Track your movements.... you have family in ze old Country?
Told ya!
Years ago I told ya.
when the interstate truck stops quit selling gas/diesel in the new green economy, how will they replace the billions in hiway repair use tax???
“Hope they stick it to the EV’s but good.”
Don’t worry, they’ve got plans for you to.
