President Biden on Thursday signed a major disaster declaration for the state of Hawaii, freeing up additional federal funding as deadly fires have ravaged Maui and other areas.
Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, certain loans to cover property losses and other programs for home and business owners, the White House said.
Biden spoke earlier Thursday by phone with Hawaii Gov. Josh Green (D) about the wildfires, the White House said.

Pretty hard to claim climate chane when only one of the islands is engulfed in flames and the others are fine. I’m thinking that fire had a little help getting started. My heart breaks for the people of Maui, it’s a beautiful island.

There is/was a huge Banyan tree in downtown Lahaina.

Apparently scorched but it survived. It is 150 years old and about 2 acres of area.

We watched a report from CBS in class yesterday where a resident of Maui was interviewed and his family survived but he said he fears over 100 are dead... bodies everywhere. He began to blame the county for ignoring the fact that this could have been prevented... overcrowding was the issue, the county had been warned, and then the reporter cut him off immediately and changed the subject.
