A rallying cry for national rent control
The Hill ^ | 08/09/2023 | TRAM HOANG

The Biden administration unveiled new protections for renters last month, including efforts to address incorrect tenant screening reports and offer better advance notice of evictions — important first steps to tackling our country’s housing crisis. The White House now has a significant opportunity to build on this announcement and bring relief to millions of households across the country with a new national rent control policy.

Following a wave of historic tenant organizing, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) — which oversees government-sponsored enterprises that provide home loans and mortgages to landlords — is exploring ways to enact and enforce tenant protections in government-backed housing. Critical among them are limits on rent increases, with the potential to benefit a third of renting households. The federal government should take this historic action, because regulating rents is one of the most effective tools to alleviate our housing crisis, immediately.

The idea is to get landlords to sell their properties on the cheap to the big investment companies.

Until the government makes it illegal to refuse Section 8 tenants.

The practical effect will be to raise the cost of capital (risk assessment) of landlords.

That will ultimately lead to less housing and poorer housing—for all renters.

What this will do is cause landlords to do condo conversions...which will make money for the landlords and take available rental property off the market.

If I had any rental property, I’d burn it down and put up a miniature golf course and 7-11.

Exactly. If there really is a housing shortage, then there should be plenty of people looking to rent. Cut Uncle Sugar out of the deal and raise the rent to market value.

One person’s relief is another person’s burden.

Simple there’s way more renters than landlords. So pander to the renters (voters) and screw the landlords. It has very bad long term consequences but the rats never concern themselves with that.

They landlords will burn them down first.

I once had a co-worker that had a rental property she let thru the government section 8.

The tenants destroyed it, and stole all the fixtures.

She will never again allow her property to be rented to the government..............
