Ohio Issue 1 fails: Big cities, suburban and many rural counties voted down issue
Columbus Dispatch ^ | August 8, 2023 | Haley BeMiller

Issue 1 was projected to fail on Tuesday, according to Decision Desk HQ, dealing a blow to Ohio Republicans who wanted to hamstring a November ballot question on abortion rights.

Decision Desk HQ, an election results reporting agency providing results and race calls for the USA TODAY Network Ohio, called the race around 8:09 p.m. With about 28% of the vote counted, no vote was leading 68% to 32%.

Tuesday’s election was the culmination of a months-long fight that began last year, when Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Ashville, first introduced a plan to tighten the rules for constitutional amendments. The debate played out in the halls of the Ohio Statehouse, on the campaign trail and even in the courtroom as opponents tried to stop GOP lawmakers in their tracks.

Proponents of the measure said they want to keep controversial policies out of the constitution and reserve it for the state's fundamental rights and values. Critics argued the ballot measure was a power grab that would hamstring the rights of citizens to place an issue on the ballot.

Ohioans appeared to buy the message opponents were selling.

President Trump is the one who can best articulate a smart GOP position on Abortion. No exceptions is just not going to fly.

The machine I voted on was “DOMINION” .

I mentioned this to a staffer noting Dominion’s reputation...and it fell on deaf ears.

Maybe he could have best articulated a position on Issue 1. Not much help in this case.

Honestly, Trump’s position on abortion is far more politically popular that DeSantis’ is. It pains me to say it but political realities are what they are.

America is not a pro-life country.

DeSantis may be the more conservatively sound on the issue of abortion but it has become all too clear, pro-life measures hurt Republicans. This was demonstrated in Kansas, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, Montana, and now Ohio.

Unfortunately the R’s screwed up the issue by adding the dumb 88 counties portion for signatures. Make the issue simple and stick to it. R’s are too dumb for their own good.

Since the demise of Roe v. Wade, abortion restrictions subject to referendum votes have failed miserably -- even in heavily Republican states.

Too local at this time. The Senate Seat will go GOP in 2024, with Trump on the ballot.

Because, like most other things, Republicans just sit back and let the left define the terms, instead of painting them as the extreamists.

This referendum was flawed for several reasons:

1) It was held in August and was the only thing on the ballot. The Republicans specifically reversed a law against August elections just for this referendum. What was the rush?

2) The process for changing the Ohio Constitution has been the same since 1912. Why does it need to change?

If this was about abortion, then the Republicans should have just said it instead of denying it all along.

The whole thing looked very cynical, and it lost 2-1 in a pretty Red state.

I suspect many Republican voters are lazy as hell and can’t be bothered to get out and vote in off-year elections, for minor offices, or for referendum votes like this.

This should disqualify LaRose for Senate.

I suspect many Republican voters, in their hearts and in the privacy of the voting booth, support abortion rights in some measure.

I'll give Trump credit on this. At least he isn't pulling punches when he calls the issue a loser for Republicans. He's 100% correct.

Why are women so eager to maintain the right to destroy their unborn children? Have men (in general) really become so lousy that they don’t see an alternative?

I also suspect many Republicans look at the U.S. election map in a typical presidential election year and wish in their hearts that women in all those “blue” states aborted their children relentlessly.

Interesting to hear that, because the conventional wisdom, has been that Democrat voters are lazy and don’t come out in special elections and off year elections.
