The Media’s Key Demo is Abandoning It
Front Page Magazine ^ | August 2, 2023 | Daniel Greenfield

The formerly unprofitable media was briefly boosted by Trumpmania. The Washington Post, the New York Times and a few national outlets and digital hangers on boosted subscription numbers and minted money.

Post-Trump there was a major falloff but now even with the media able to promise a Trump comeback, indictments and trials, its flocks of sheep don’t seem to want to come back.

The troublesome trend is spelled out in research by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism. For years, the Oxford-based think tank has been asking people around the world about their news-consumption habits. In its latest survey, 38 percent of U.S. respondents say they sometimes or often avoid news, including 41 percent of women and 34 percent of men.

At the same time, the proportion of people who are “extremely” or “very interested” in the news continued to sink. In the United States, this group was in the minority (49 percent) for the first time in the survey’s short history, down from 67 percent in 2015. The institute’s data also suggest a sharper percentage-point drop abroad (including 27 points in the United Kingdom).

The media (like most fanatics) forgot Alinsky’s Rule 7, “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”

People are becoming burned out and they’re in the key media demo, wealthy, female and liberal.

Carolyn Cohen, a retired teacher in the Washington area, was a committed MSNBC viewer and used to read The Washington Post cover to cover. Lately, she has backed off, out of a sense of self-preservation.

“I may glance at the headlines, but I can’t handle the stress put on me when I go to the front page,” she says...

People are told to live in fear. Of everything.

No one wants to live like that. People will turn off that message at some point.

No reason to watch the news. It’s all negative half truths and outright lies.

The media and our pseudo media, our 24/7 negative TDS posters (like most fanatics) forgot Alinsky’s Rule #7:

“A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag!”

I almost completely gave up on the mainstream media in Spring of 2000 because of Free Republic. I had been lurking for a couple years, then got really involved because of the Cincinnati riots that occurred at that time. That was when it became totally obvious to me that the lies of both commission and especially omission were out of control, and there was no fixing it.

Another “dinosaur media” death watch?

The Washington Post proved that profits have nothing to do with their operation. Propaganda is it’s own reward.

The younger Demos, under 35, aren't watching the nightly news at all. They get their news from Rogan and other podcasts. I recall a niece saying years back they got the news from watching Colbert. Magazines, nope - all these legacy media outlets are only viewed by people over 60.

“only viewed by people over 60”

Not this over 60 guy. I quit watching the news more than 30 years ago.

I remember a young mushskull saying that.

Young people do not read. They watch TikToc, Instagram, YouTube shorts, etc., mostly celebrity and Jackass-like crap.

The red-pilled represent about 30% of the population. Radical Communists represent about 30% of the population. The remaining 40% blow with the wind.

I get it! Right slanted news and media outlets, including FR, have their own pitfalls. There are times when I need to stop reading and watching. How many times can you read "Breaking", "Bombshell", "Any day now", ""Biden's end in sight", "Comey, Jordan, MTG, McCarthy ... will impeach or have hearings.." AND nothing changes?? Promises, titillation, misleading headlines .....

It would seem that many on the right and left are becoming tired of fake news and/or hyperbole.

When the news (right or left) prints/streams that an elite democrat criminal is sentenced to prison or to hang - let me know! Until then, it's all show to gain viewers, i.e., to gain $$.

The newspaper in my little city has stopped physically printing a newspaper. They do an electronic one.

American journalists don’t really care about reporting the news.

They care about letting everyone know their opinions and feelings.

--- "In its latest survey, 38 percent of U.S. respondents say they sometimes or often avoid news, including 41 percent of women and 34 percent of men."

Whether the numbers are exact of guesstimates, one finds parallel info that people are turning away from cable news, and other media.

What this WILL mean in time is that businesses will come to see their "advertising" dollars are not being well spent. Ad revenue is moving about as well, so it is not just viewers and subscribers.

It used to be that we had reporters who told you the "who, what, when, where, why and how" of a story. Now we have "journalists" who tell you what to think about the story.

Now we have Left Wing activists employed as "journalists".

Same holds true for the Trump indictments. If they had just indicted him for one thing, it would have gotten them the effect they seem to want, for every leftie to be able to say “BuT tRUmp iS AN INdICtEd cRIminAL!!!!”

Indicting him 5, 10, 15 times just makes it all boring and farcical, achieving the opposite effect.
