Why electric vehicles are ‘piling up’ at dealerships, despite massive taxpayer subsidies

Ford Motor recently announced it is slashing prices on its F-150 Lightning, an electric vehicle the company rolled out in 2021.

The Lightning now carries a suggested retail price of $49,995, about $10,000 lower than its previous recommended price tag ($59,974), a reduction the company says is possible because of lower “battery raw material costs and continued work on scaling production and cost.”

It’s certainly possible that reduced overhead from battery minerals and production costs played a role in Ford’s decision to trim its price tag by nearly 20 percent, but that may be only half the story.

Several reports show EVs are not exactly flying off dealership lots. In fact, there’s a glut of them.

Subsidy: life support for an idea that would die if left on its own.

The cool thing about an EV is you’ll be able to buy them for next to nothing in ten years.

Because the residuals are shit, because of the battery life / replacement costs, but nobody wants to talk about it.

And you probably won’t.

“imagine snow banks piled on top of them...”

Or during a garbage strike, 20ft of black plastic bags burying them.

Or stripped down, sitting on wire milk crates.

And on and on and on.

A huge amount of the “value” is in the battery pack. Until the lifetime is better understood, plus any recyclability value, the numbers remain unknown.

Maybe because they lack the range to do anything meaningful?

Maybe because it takes forever to charge them?

Maybe because on EV trucks you can’t tow anything heavier than a kitchen sink without taking a massive range hit?

Maybe because it costs almost as much to replace the batteries as it would to buy a new car?

Maybe because they get totaled out after a minor collision?

Or maybe it’s because they spontaneously combust for no reason?

They could be free and I wouldn’t want one. How is AAA going to bring me a cup of electrons?

Plus, quick charging isn’t recommended- so waiting for hours and/or planning on getting back home before the battery is low just isn’t reasonable

“We as a nation do not have an electric grid to support them”

Bingo.

Without evs, California has had brownouts every summer since I can remember. Now Texas is joining the game. And there’s warnings for the Northeast grid for the coming week.

“The battery pack itself is the majority of the cost with variations ranging from around $1,000 to $6,000, although most batteries for common models tend to be under $3,000. Along with the battery itself, you’ll need to pay a certified mechanic to install the high-voltage battery. The job often takes a few hours, and sometimes more than a full day.”

Every time I see scores of cordless tools discarded because the battery is shot and replacing the battery is about as expensive as the tool...

I picture landfills full of cheaply built electric cars discarded because their batteries are shot and it’s owners decided replacing the battery isn’t worth it. Maybe it is my imagination but I couldn’t bring myself to buy what I perceive to be a “disposable” car.
