Just 71% of young males in 2021 held a full-time job — that's a big drop from 85% in 1980. Why millions of men are dropping out of the workforce at an alarming rate

Millions of men are abandoning the workforce at an alarming rate, according to analysis of Census Bureau data by the Pew Research Center.

The data reveals that 71% of young men (aged 25 years old at the time of the study) held full-time jobs, down from 85% in 1980.

A survey conducted by the Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank found that 25% of young Americans were out of work, many of whom had been laid off during the pandemic and have since struggled to find the right job.

Real earnings for men without college degrees has dropped 30% since the 1980s. The relative decline in earnings also had an impact on the social status of these jobs, which impacts men in the marriage market. Younger men are more likely to see their social status and marriage prospects diminish if their peers are outearning them.

By some measures, prime-aged men have worse mental and physical health now than 30 years ago.

Problem is “helicopter” parents.
I walked to school or rode my bike.
I had three rules
carry change to call home
be home by dinner
don’t get in trouble with the cops

I wasn’t that exceptional nor has society changed that much.
There is just as many nut case perverts then as now.
but kids were more observant, as they didn’t have mom and dad hovering over them.

Circa 1966. I was lower middle class. My grandparents whom raised me did not have the financial assets to send me to college, they were saints. I went to Mr. Rebstock of the 2R drilling company and asked for a job for the summer. He gave me a job and it was hot and dangerous work as a roughneck on a drilling rig. I went to school and did the same the next summer.

Thank you Mr. Rebstock. I became everything in my tagline below due to you giving me a job.

I keep getting postcards in the mail from the USPS saying that THEY’RE hiring as well. I remember when a job at the post office was a job for life, and competition was STIFF to get one.

People in the energy field did and are doing too good a job. The energy sector literally makes the world go round. Yet, it is taken for granted. People have no idea what would happen without fossil and nuclear fuels.

Thanks for your service.

My son is a GM in a nationwide restaurant chain you’ve heard of. They’re ALWAYS hiring. The problem he sees with workers is that they show up, work 1 pay period, get their check, and then never come back. They appear to only work long enough to get money to get by for some period of time, and then go somewhere else and do it again.

I have 3 young adult men in their 20s. One is in college, the other 2 are employed and in good jobs. One married. I think the key is we didn’t allow them to live at home (other than college summers) after 18. We are the minority though now—the majority of men in their 20s now live with parents.

No incentive to be “marriage-ready” because they get the milk for free now from a LOT of young women who still consider looks, etc. more important than security like jobs and stuff.

So....the males ‘exist’ for the now and the future is something they don’t think about as long as that side of the female spectrum is available.

I think the option of easily getting money that’s supposed to be used for college, etc. (student loans) is always a fall back for them, too.

Just my opinion...

I saw a county road worker ad three months ago....for my home-county in Alabama. Yeah, it’s an ad that probably hasn’t been listed in fifty years. Comes with state medical package, and pension deal.

I’ve heard bus-driver positions for various school districts are getting this way as well.

“ …whoopin BY THE FATHER… “

There are a lot of ‘no-father’ ‘families now’.

I don’t know how common it is, but I see a lot of “Dear Abby” letters that involve a working-age man mooching off his girlfriend. It certainly seems more common among people my age (mid-30s) than among older generations.

Basing your perception of reality on "Dear Abby" letters is tantamount to watching "home security system" commercials on t.v., and concluding that most home intruders must be White men.

You get a job, go to work and get cancelled by the first Karen you make a joke near. You say something nice about a pretty girl’s appearance and then have to go through sensitivity training. You work your ass off and get good only to be passed over for promotion because a woman or minority has been more oppressed.

Excellent summarization!

In over 32 years I have not had one kid or young adult knock on my door and ask for any work. We have had a nation of many
teen druggies for the last 50-60 years.

Teenagers USED TO be able to start off with a junker car their parents provided, get a job to help maintain it, and move on up from that humble beginning.

The junker you could work on no longer exists thanks to regulations.

Kids can’t get out of the house. Hard to hold a job you can’t get to.

Multi-generational welfare & illegal immigration not parsed out in this study I presume.

Funny how all of a sudden the article’s picture contains no diversity.

“You didn’t “struggle to find the right job” when you were unemployed.”

Kids are being programmed to “follow your passion.” What the heck does that mean when you’re just starting out? You can’t get passionate about something until you’ve seen enough of the world to decide what you should be passionate about. I’m 69. I worked an entire career in engineering. I hated just about every minute of it. But it paid well. Especially by the end I’d find myself repeating, “I’m just here for the paycheck.” Passion my a$$.

My dad moved to where the jobs were. Offen, he commuted several hours away and stayed in a motel only coming home every other weekend.

I had an interesting observation yesterday. I was working on a rental unit. I had to deal with several tradesmen and the power company. The men I dealt with were at least my age, possibly older. Where are the young men? Are they all writing apps for some California company?
