India's rice export ban triggers panic buying at US supermarkets - sparking costs of 20-pound bag to soar from $16 to almost $50

India's rice export ban has triggered panic buying at US supermarkets, causing the price of a 20-pound bag to surge from $16 to almost $50 in some stores.

The south Asian country, which accounts for 40 percent of world rice exports, ordered a halt to its largest rice export category, non-basmati rice, on Thursday to calm domestic prices, sparking fears of global shortages.

Videos and reports shared on social media over the weekend show Indian-Americans standing in long lines or panic-buying rice in Texas, Michigan, New Jersey Alabama, Ohio, Illinois and California.

Some stores have hiked the price of a 20-pound bag to $46.99 and have started money-making schemes to capitalize on the panic, according to Business Line.

'A few desi grocery shops came up with innovative ideas to force customers to spend a minimum of $35-$50 on other items to purchase a single rice bag, which is outrageous,' a shopper told the outlet.

I read once that basmati rice was the third most imported commodity in the word, after oil and coffee.

Thank you senile Joe and war cheerleaders, your sanctions backfired, global trade destroyed….good thing Russia has plenty of everything- self sufficient-maybe he will make amends and sell his vast excess supplies to the West?…. Like we did for Russia in the 70’s/80’s?….amazing how the tables have turned.

The US rice production comes from California and several Southern states. Half of the rice produced in the US is consumed domestically. And here’s one for the price gougers: 80% of rice consumed in the US is domestic. So Foreign restrictions can only affect 20% of our rice budget at the utmost.

same here. We tried to stock up at Walmart on Basmati from India by getting 3 20 lbs bags. Sunday early afternoon.

And there was only one left in the store when we got there.

So I hope this doesn’t spill over to basmati and jasmine.

We may try to stock up a bit more just in case.
We eat rice quite often. I am celiac and rice is a staple for me.

Basmati will go up too because it’s in easy substitute and once people try it they’ll prefer it to other types of rice for many dishes. I’m going to blame Biden.

My thoughts as well.

“Just as long as the Basmati rice keeps flowing. I don’t eat rice much, but when I do, it’s Basmati.”

I would expect that to get snapped up as well.

Btw, for those who know enough to watch their carbs, Basmati Rice was the best rice that I could find for carbs, as it has the lowest amount...but it is still rice, and still carb-loaded, just not quite as much as the others.

I stock a bunch of Basmati Rice as a survival food, in case the Neocons figure out a way to get Russia to nuke us, but otherwise, no plans to eat it.

If you are looking for low glycemic food, we have recently fallen in love with breadfruit.

Amazon has a cake/muffin mix that we tried and loved.
So now I want to get some breadfruit flour.

The US rice production comes from California and several Southern states.

The problem is that rice requires a lot of water to grow and in places like California there is a war on agriculture that uses lots of water to produce food.

Not unless I want to work Indian wages. Same problem for lots of folks, worse for those of us in our 60s. H1B should go home, all of them as there has never been a shortage of American workers.
