Most members of the US women’s soccer team stayed silent during the national anthem before its World Cup opener Friday against newcomers Vietnam — who passionately belted their nation’s tune.
The majority of the reigning women’s World Cup champion team stared stoically ahead as the “Star Spangled Banner” blasted across New Zealand’s Eden Park arena.
Only five of the 11 players who stood on the field for the anthem — with young, aspiring players standing before them — placed their hands over their hearts, while their six teammates kept their digits clasped behind their backs

Only three USWNT players — Julie Ertz, Alyssa Naeher and Lindsey Horan — sang along with the hundreds of American supporters watching in the stands.
Comparatively, members of World Cup debutant Vietnam emphatically crooned their national song

The women’s USWNT team has a complicated history with the national anthem.

Forward Megan Rapinoe has continuously knelt during “The “Star-Spangled Banner” following NFL player Colin Kaepernick’s protest in 2016.
Rapinoe, who is playing in her last World Cup before retiring and was the first woman to kneel in the practice, claimed in the weeks before her team’s 2019 World Cup win that she would “never put my hand over my heart.”

Well said.
Assuming they didn’t hang her in the public square.
but nobody cares about these soccer women today....young people don't really follow most of these sports like older people and we older people are just sick of all of them..
As are many posts these days on FR. Posts that fuel outrage get the most responses.
Ya’ mean someone was watching?
WHAT HEART???
The left virtue signals, the right outrage signals.
Because they’re narcissists, they like the glory because it says they’re the best - the country, nah, not so much...
It doesn’t surprise me.
I found it funny that Lionel Messi’s debut with Inter Miami overshadowed the USWNT playing in the Women’s World Cup.
Support the country no matter what? Or does it depend who the president is at the time? Is the country going in a good direction, should that be a good reason to sing proudly?
Playing the national anthem was never a foundation of our country, and Wilson was the bro who brought it out in force. It's a weird tradition to have prior to a commercialized sporting event, and perhaps should be left to people who care about it.
I’ve never sung the anthem, but then I’ve never sung anything really.
I couldn’t conceivably care less.
‘99% of all athletes in America keep their mouth shut during the anthem.’
and do 99% of them refuse to place their hands on the heart, as the majority of these little dears did...?
“..that she would “never put my hand over my heart.”
The sardine breath skag doesn’t have a heart.
‘It’s just people looking for reasons to get mad.’
based on your posts on this thread, nobody’s getting as mad as you are...
“I saw it and I was hoping for better enthusiasm for representing our/their wonderful Country.”
Which one...there are two “our countries” now.
“The women’s USWNT team...”
Somehow that makes me want to play around with letters.😎
I’m not mad at all. I’m amused. The people who want their panties in a twist at all times are hilarious. Sad. But also hilarious.
Yeah, and then tomorrow they’ll be blaming the low interest in women’s soccer on “misogyny”.
