Children Waiting Over a Year in Pain for NHS Tooth Removal
BBC ^ | 7/19 | Ruth Green, Jonathan Fagg & Dominic Hughes

Children in some areas of England are waiting up to 18 months on average for dental general-anaesthetic treatment and teeth extractions, an investigation reveals. Some have been left with prolonged dental pain, according to information shared with BBC News.

The parents of one girl who has waited three years for extractions say the pain keeps her up at night. At the start of this year, more than 12,000 under-18s were on waiting lists for assessment or treatment at community dental service (CDS) providers, data obtained by the Liberal Democrats from the NHS Business Services Authority and shared with BBC News earlier this year reveals.

Children are referred to a CDS provider when they have tooth decay too severe to be treated in general practice. The longest average wait faced by children for general-anaesthetic treatment at a CDS provider is 80 weeks, at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust.

Man, the numbers of times Brits have defended their universal health care system, saying how a compassionate system it is. How compassionate is it to make children wait a year for a tooth extraction?

The last time I needed to get a tooth pulled, I went to a dentist office at the nearby mall, only about a 10-12 minute drive from my house. And I didn’t have an appointment. They pulled the tooth (used local anesthetic) and I paid out of pocket (150 bucks if I recall correctly). And I was home in a couple of hours (that included a stop at my pharmacy to pick up the pain killers and antibiotics the dentist prescribed for me).

I could have had my insurance company pay for a tooth extraction, but that would have meant having to travel to a different dentist office that was more further away from my place, plus I would have had to make an appointment that could’ve taken place anywhere from a couple days to a week and I was in pain and in no mood to wait a few days.

Socialized/government medicine. Uncaring control of costs by rationing services and medications.

I hear a car or a truck will do if one doesn’t have a doorknob handy.

Well, at least they don’t have to pay for it as they like to brag...

Yeah, we have to pay for it here, but we can get this done literally the same day in many cases, not wait 18 months in pain - and bad teeth can lead to other health problems - including heart problems. Even charity cases here don’t wait anywhere near this long for healthcare.

Very sad...like mentioned above, this can cause other serious health issues to arise...that I guess she would have to wait another 3 years to deal with, if she survives that long.

In the US, this could be done in one day. One day. Even after all of the damage from Obamacare. And she's been waiting 3 years.

This is the healthcare system the Democrats want us to emulate. "Coverage" vs. healthcare.

Socialized (government run)healthcare: Inefficient, incompetent treatment, long waiting periods to receive treatment.

Ah, but everyone has "coverage"

In Britain everyone has the right to mediocre care that should have been rendered 12 months earlier.

My one experience with major tooth pain taught me a significant lesson. The procedure is called a Root Canal. Our teeth are alive, and the root of each tooth is enclosed (and VERY sensitive). When the root becomes infected, there is not a lot of room for it to expand, and the pain is considerable. It’s the kind of pain that brings tears to your eyes.

I now have dental floss at home, in the car, at my desk, everywhere. If someone thinks it is weird that I am flossing when stuck at a long stoplight, or in stalled traffic, too bad.

Maybe the BBC reporter didn't realize this was a no-no. Saw interviews done by one particular BBC reporter named Philomena Cunk who I could see not quite realizing it.

NHS ... where people go to die. Probably children escaped abortion but a tooth infection could take them out belatedly.

LOL, they invented the toothbrush there, otherwise it would be a teethbrush.

BUT, BUT, BUT... IT’S FREE!
(You get the service you pay for)

That someone would wait in pain for three years instead of paying for it themselves is crazy.

You get the service you pay for. Have you considered paying for it out of pocket?

Ask a veteran how good the service is at a VA hospital.

Yes. It's terrible. Fortunately, Cancun is well-connected so it's easy for Americans to get on a flight there. Maybe Havana, if they ever get rid of Communism for good due to their proximity to Florida. If not, theres still the Bahamas. Doctors won't have to worry about malpractice and accepting subpar payments from Medicare.

Same here. But not to worry. It’s free.

The Brits love the free health care. We’re the Yanks , the barbarians who don’t have free health care.

It’s all quite simple really old boy.
