Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit of the BRICS group of emerging economies in South Africa in August "by mutual agreement", South Africa's presidency said on Wednesday.

Russia will instead be represented by its Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the Johannesburg summit, alongside the leaders of Brazil, India, China and South Africa, the presidency said in a statement.

South Africa faced a dilemma in hosting the summit because, as a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), it would theoretically be required to arrest Putin for alleged war crimes if he were to attend.

Such a shame Putin didn’t fly to South Africa. His plane could have been forced down and he could have been arrested to face justice in The Hague. Or he could have been shot down. Either would have been a constructive outcome.

I think it’s extremely unlikely anyone would force Putin’s plane down. Nobody wants to have Putin in custody as it might mean immediate retaliation from Russia. Putin would be “the hot potato.” We saw this play out when nobody wanted the Shah of Iran. That’s point one.

Point two is whatever comes after Putin might be worse. Even the man Putin has been slowly killing in prison for his “democratic” ideals believes Ukraine is a natural possession of Russia. The mechanism for filling the army’s ranks without any public announcement of a draft callup already exists in Russian law. There would be no public blowup for calling up an additional half million men as the only people who would know it happened would be the guys going to the Ukrainian front.

But the real reason Putin isn’t going is, generally speaking, a ruler not at home is much more likely to be deposed.

Obviously Putin feared for his safety so he’s going to stay at home in his bunker. I guess someone told him about Admiral Yamamoto.

"by mutual agreement"

Putin is the subject of a warrant of arrest by the International Criminal Court related to alleged war crimes during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. As a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the ICC, South Africa would be obligated to arrest Putin if he visits the African nation.

You’re over the target here. Putin didn’t want to go and got the South Africans to give him cover. He’s still humiliated and exposed as weak, though.

Putin is facing arrest for war crimes, as far as corruption Russia is rated as far more corrupt than Ukraine, that wasn’t the situation in 2014/15 when Ukraine was seen as more corrupt than Russia, but Russia is getting worse.

It is the same with Human Trafficking, in 2010 both Ukraine and Russia were tier 2 countries but today Russia is tier 3 and 6th worse in the world.

People should at least be condemning Russia’s Human Trafficking.
