CNN was the kingmaker in 2016; why shouldn’t it be now? In a shift for his campaign, Ron DeSantis plans to sit down with CNN’s Jake Tapper to discuss the Florida governor’s vision for America. It will no doubt make CNN some cash that the network apparently needs. Like a quickly arranged fight between two spendthrift boxers, both the network and the campaign have a sense of urgency.
While I remain unconcerned about DeSantis’s prospects, the early success of DeSantis’s campaign in national and state-level polling has slipped ever since Trump regained the news cycle, in the wake of investigations and splashy bombast. DeSantis initially eschewed confrontational media hits, but he now has the opportunity to harvest more than a few cuts of red meat for a base that hasn’t seen as many gladiatorial trophies from the gator governor as they may have expected.
JUST ANNOUNCED: GOP presidential hopeful and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will sit down with @CNN’s @JakeTapper on the campaign trail in South Carolina for an exclusive interview. But is CNN the place to start for a DeSantis media blitz? Yes, even though a lousy showing would be costly. While there may be friendlier or less skeptical interviewers than Tapper — on a Daily Wire or Joe Rogan Experience appearance, say — many primary voters either watch CNN or hate CNN, and they would like to see Tapper, the network’s face, humiliated. Fogies have opinions about CNN one way or the other. DeSantis is 20 points behind Trump in that elder segment, compared with a 50-point gap with the youngest voters, but there are no more than seven GOP voters under 25, and three of them are Trump grifters (good work if you can get it). So while the Trump–DeSantis gap is narrowest with the older electorate, there are a great many voters in the bloc who remain unconvinced of DeSantis’s future.
If DeSantis has any chance of unseating Trump, he needs the free press that a CNN appearance offers. The New York Times, the Washington Post, Fox News, and ABC will all have opinions about his appearance there that they wouldn’t even comment on if he went to a podcast or Web-based news outlet — old media loathe new media, after all.
DeSantis grappling with Tapper will prime the network windbags, and there’s nothing better for a ship’s sails than Favonius’s blessing.
I doubt it will benefit your man at all, and may actually hurt him.
We will see.
Even if he was, DeSantos would lose big to the Democraps. With all the cheating, fraud, rigged elections etc, only one person has a chance against them and that's Trump. It's going to take big numbers to beat them and Trump, if anyone, can deliver. No one else stands a chance.
And that means Biden as well!
I like the puppy dog. :)
2016 was a different animal. Trump used exposure in the mainstream media to help him get elected.
However, by 2020, all of the coverage was negative. So that destroyed Trump's chance of getting reelected.
In 2016, Trump was running against Hillary. He was the lesser of two evils in that scenario.
I watched Desantis in his Fox “I don’t do insults” interview. He looked very relaxed and happy. It’s not his problem if we don’t nominate him for President, it’s our problem.
History will judge DeSantis’ choice to run for President in 2024.
It won’t be pretty and the end won’t be a, “happy ever after,” good story.
What was the urgency for DeSantis? He is young, governing well in Florida and the GOP has not sorted out how to succeed in politics. Why not serve out his term as Governor and run in 2028?
CNN was part of Hillary’s Reelection Committee.
Trump trashed CNN and the mainstream media and America loved it.
You're suggesting in 2016 all Trump's coverage was positive??
It's amazing how people forget what happened just a few years ago.
DeSantis needs to go back to Florida and do the job he was elected to do.
You don’t see any urgency in the current situation in the USA? OK, that’s your perception and you are entitled to it. Both Desantis and I think that 2024 could be the end of the road for our semi-democratic republic, if we don’t replace the current government. Things aren’t going well at all.
WOW! National Review and CNN: fake conservatives and real clowns! ... and doesn’t get much more anti-MAGA than that!
There is nothing in constitution as far as I know which would prevent Trump from running for president from prison.
If Americans elect him from prison, he can then pardon himself. The US constitution is amazing. It gives people the power to elect whom they want.
Nation Review hyping a CNN appearance doesn’t help DeSantis’s campaign.
“CNN’s Trump town hall draws 3.3 million viewers”
uh, that was because that was a Trump town hall at CNN ... will be interesting to see how many tune in for desantis CNN town hall ...
“However, by 2020, all of the coverage was negative.”
ROTFLOL! as i recall, ALL of the media coverage was negative for Trump in 2015-2016, including numerous hoaxes, fake anonymous sources, and tons of outright lies ...
I live in FLorida, and DeSantis was doing very well, even though Trump had been attacking him and insulting him from the very start, long before anybody had announced, as soon as Trump saw him as a potential rival.
He has genuinely conservative positions, he fights for them, and he has done very well here, especially for getting the schools out of the grip of the Dem teachers’ union and supporting the police. He gets along with his associates and respects them, so he actually has good allies.
He never responded to Trump’s insults and just ignored him, which is the best thing to do.
The truth is that the indictment was the best thing that ever happened to Trump, because suddenly everybody felt they had to support Trump. I happen to agree...we need to support Trump and fight for him and also encourage him to challenge the faux election that suddenly had Basement Biden with 81,000,000 votes. This is crucial to our system or it’s all over.
But we don’t need to make him president (he wouldn’t win anyway, except with his “base”) unless he at least has the courage to come out and debate the other candidates or speak to a hostile interviewer or audience.
He needs to offer his policies - not just slogans - and also needs to be honest about some things that he did as president...kowtowing to Fauci and Pence, the shut-down, the enforced vaccines, the appointment of numerous bad Swamp dwellers (such as Christopher Wray) to crucial posts, etc.
And he will have to answer the age question. If it’s valid for Biden, it’s valid for Trump. Particularly since we know that he would be exactly like Biden and the Dems in his VP pick...that is, somebody who would be totally useless but wouldn’t overshadow him. In other words, another Pence.
Although, sadly, he did end up needing a “real” VP because the loser Pence was not an ally, not only with the voting question but with the Covid situation.
It shows no respect for the voters to have Trump hiding out and flinging insults from afar, and I think his support is going to decline now that people have made a statement.
And I do think he should actually go after his legitimate claims and he would get all of America, not just his “base”, behind him while he fights this.
Only a vicious, but facile, hammering of Tapper could do Ron any good in this interview. I don’t expect it...But would like to see it...Disclaimer—I will always back Trump as the preeminent conservative warrior on the scene. However, I am also mindful of the future.
That was Trump
Wait until you see the numbers for DeSantis’s CNN interview.
Then you will have ‘egg on your face’.
