The left likes to treat skeptics of electrical cars as if they were Luddites. Truth is, making an existing product less efficient but more expensive doesn't really meet the definition of innovation.
Even the purported amenities and technological advances EV makers like to brag about in their ads have been a regular feature of gas-powered vehicles going back generations. At best, EVs, if they fulfill their promise, are a lateral technology.
Which is why there is no real "emerging market" for EVs in the United States as much as there's an industrial policy in place that props up EVs with government purchases, propaganda, state subsidies, cronyism, taxpayer-backed loans and edicts. The green "revolution" is an elite-driven, top-down technocratic project.
And it's increasingly clear that the only reason giant rent-seeking car makers are so heavily invested in EV development is that government is promising to artificially limit the production of gas-powered cars.
In August 2021, President Joe Biden signed an executive order to set a target for half of all new vehicles sold in 2030 to be zero-emission. California claims it is banning combustion engines in all new cars in about 10 years. So, car makers adopt business models to deal with these distorted incentives and contrived theoretical markets of the future.

The country and western world would have been better off with mandatory hybrids on new vehicles. An instant 40% decrease in fossil fuel use. This would buy us time to plan the next step, like new copper mines which take 10 years to bring to production or raise more Congolese children to mine cobalt.
Studebaker made an EV in 1908. Didn’t sell them either apparently
I saw a report recently that Toyota is saying the EV’s are not viable right now, given the state of battery technology.
Imagine for a second you buy and now own an EV. Now, let’s just suppose you drive it for 10 years or so, and “run it into the ground” (if that is possible).
Now what do you do with the CARcass?
(hint: your local junkyard is not gonna take it off your hands)
You sort of lost me at “mandatory”.
Environmentalist are full of Stupid ideas
“copper mines”
As I understand it, that is a damn nasty business and not exactly environmentally friendly......which I think was your point.
A good piece, and I love EVs mainly as something fun that diversifies my energy among different forms (love my ICE cars too). I like the description as a lateral technology. That is all it should be considered, and it shouldn’t be so subsidized by the force of government.
We keep pushing “climate stuff”....and ignoring....food shortages...like crazy stuff....baby formula...electronic ‘necessitiEs” like chips....Man is not going to change the climate...you build dams, sea walls, use better insulation...nature has given us everything...and that includes fossil fuels.
EVs:
Fools and their money are soon parted.
Children in the Congo don’t like EVs…
You’re gonna pay for them to take it away....just like I did for my tube TV...and a Monitor.
Problems with environmental damage from mining needed materials
Problems with slave labor used in mining needed materials
Problems with generating enough electricity
Problems with providing electrical distribution points where needed
Problems with battery technology
Problems with electrical fires
Problems with road/bridge/parking garage damage from heavy EVs
Problems with disposal of EVs at end of life
Not viable? I never would have guessed.
Maybe we should go back to steam cars. they worked well, were fast, and could burn Natural Gas and be clean.
Nice in depth article here. A little biased but generally solid analysis.
Since when did a free society accept mandating a product?
“Which is why there is no real “emerging market” for EVs in the United States...”
Capitalism at work in all its glory......produce a product that no one wants and go belly up.....which is why the left is attempting to cram EVs down our throat......just like obamacare.
Ergo, don't believe what these various car companies say. They are biased toward their own developments (of course).
Automakers are just guessing as to what they will be allowed to build in the future. As it is the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards have destroyed their product. They used to make big sedans and station wagons, light duty trucks for work and a range of economy cars. People would buy what they needed to suit their needs. With CAFE in place they have to either squeeze every mile out of every gas fume to avoid paying a fine to the feds. It has also driven the size of the pickup truck to the level of the former medium duty 2.5 ton trucks
