The Jewish community in Azerbaijan has expressed deep satisfaction with the exceptional dialogue that took place at the international summit at the European Parliament, which dealt with Iran’s conduct towards minority groups residing in the country, primarily towards the Azeri community.
“The Jews were persecuted for many years and we know well how it feels,” stated Rabbi Zamir Isayev, rabbi of the Georgian Sephardic community in Azerbaijan. We, specifically, are obligated more than anyone towards the Azeri nation that suffers from ongoing oppression.”
Rabbi Isayev added, “We will raise the matter at every international forum, if we can. The matter of Iran’s oppression of the Azeri minority has to be at the top of the world public agenda.”

Jews, who have been persecuted, have an obligation to help anyone who has been persecuted? Now that the Azeris are being persecuted, do they have an obligation to help Balluchis or Ahwazis, who are also being persecuted in Iran? Is this an obligation just for Jews? What about Gypsies and Irishmen? Because Jews were persecuted longer and harder and in more places than other peoples who are being persecuted or have been persecuted, is our "obligation" more acute? What about towards people who once did the persecution of Jews but are now being persecuted in some way, such as Ukrainians?
Jews have no obligation to help Azeris, except because it's the decent thing to do. Perhaps those who have done some persecution, such as Germans, Spaniards and Frenchmen, have a special obligation to help persecuted people, but contrary to common belief, Jews are not all rich, do not have limitless resources because of some international conspiracy, and have our hands filled helping those Jews who are still being persecuted throughout the world.
I wish the Azeris well, and hope the Iranian government stops persecuting and oppressing them. But this "rabbi" is a moral idiot, who has forgotten the Talmudic dictum: Help the poor in your family first, then you help the poor in your city, then the poor elsewhere. And the same goes for those who are persecuted.
Would it be different if a minister or priest said “Christians have a duty to help oppressed people?”
Because that’s what Jesus taught us to do.
And Jesus, was first and foremost, the World’s greatest Jew and the Messiah of the Jews and Gentiles.
This Rabbi is saying that there is a RELIGIOUS duty, not a national or tribal duty.
I do believe this is an important Judeo-Christian principle.
No, this rabbi is no idiot. He's doing PR:
1. He stirs up bad press against Israel's enemy, Iran.
2. He makes the Jews look good, showing compassion for non-Jews.
3. It costs him (and Jews, and Israel) nothing. (It's like wearing a red ribbon to show the world you care about AIDS victims.)

No idea. Putin did, too, and also ordered the Armenians to give up their ancient stronghold in Nagorno-Karabakh and financed the Azeri natural gas pipeline there. Ostensibly, he’s the declared protector of the eastern churches.
Israel has a substantial Armenian population. They have their own quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem. One would think that for their sake Israel would have at least stayed out of the conflict.
If I had to support anyone, it’d be the Armenians, for the reasons stated in my #1 above.
There is a Palestinian boy who has severe diabetes. His uncle is a close friend of mine. He needs a CGM system. I got my daughter to start a GoFundMe page for him (GFM doesn’t do fundraising from Israel), and donate $20 USD of her own money, but so far that’s all I’ve managed. If I can raise more money for a worthy cause, it’ll go to this kid’s diabetes treatment.
Supporting all the causes that need help, however, is an important component of the duty to help anyone in need. And one must prioritize as a practical matter. And in my order of priorities, the Azers in Iran have to get in line and take a number. In Iran itself, it’s more of a priority to help the persecuted Ahwazi, because the oil that Iran is using to terrorize the world and finance war, persecution and espionage, is being stolen from under their feet, as it has for the past 100 years. Give the Ahwazi back their rights to their lands and its mineral wealth, and you defund the Ayatollahs.
Persians were ALWAYS friendly to Jews before the dark times.
Tell that to Achashverosh and Haman. “Always” is a bit of an overshot. We’re talking 3,000 years here.
But he spoke fluent Persian. The Sassanids were no sticklers on race, something of a meritocracy.
Nobody mentioned Putin, but that is incorrect. Russia and Armenia have had a military aid pact since the 90’s, Putin gave the Azeri PM an ultimatum to broker a peace agreement.
The peace agreement was very much in Azerbaijan’s favor. They get the pipeline. Armenians abandon their 1,000-year-old churches and homes and go ‘way.
