When I learned that an alleged shoplifter was stabbed to death Thursday by a drugstore clerk in Times Square, I was surprised only that the killing had happened at the CVS at Broadway and 49th Street, not at the Duane Reade at Broadway and 50th Street. Over more than three years, since New York’s criminal-justice “reforms” collided with pandemic dislocations, this stretch of Broadway and the surrounding blocks and subway stations have become a magnet for disorder and danger. That a nearby resident—me—must weigh up the relative dangers of shopping at or even walking by one store rather than the other says a lot about New York’s deterioration.
The numbers show that supposedly minor shoplifting has become a crisis, one stemming from changes to New York criminal law and in how New York prosecutes that law. In 2019, the New York legislature and then-governor Andrew Cuomo reformed state criminal-justice laws to ensure that virtually no repeat shoplifters, whether suspected or convicted, go to jail awaiting trial. In 2022, new Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg said that no matter what the law said, he wouldn’t prosecute shoplifting, anyway. A person who “shoplifts and makes a minimal threat to a store employee while leaving . . . pose[s] no genuine risk,” he directed staffers upon taking office.

It says even more about you. Staying in a shite-hole city like this.
I really don’t know why any NYC resident purchases things. Stores are full for free stuff. Walk in. Pick it up. Walk out. There are no laws.
WARNING! Shoplifters Will Be Stabbed To Death!
Oh noes! A drug store desert. Quick call the shoulder chip crusader moochee marauder! 😳💉💊
SPJNK.
I was in that store in April. It’s getting pretty crazy.
Admittance to store by certified cell phone app only.
We may disable your cell phone for what we feel is just cause. Just cause includes shoplifting or vandalism.
Governor Hochmut says NYC is a low crime rate paradise.
Gun Free Zone...bring a knife...
It is getting the same way in Honolulu. The other day two idiots walked into a home Depot and loaded up a bunch of stuff into two carts. They walked as you please and even recorded on security cameras. The employees can’t do a damned thing because they will either be fired or sued. I am sure I don’t have to tell you that Hawaii is a blue state.
Shoplifting could be punished via penalty time rooms.
Dear Arrested Person:
To avoid 30 days jail please enroll in our penalty time diversion program by spending at least 8 hours in a program penalty time room within 168 hours of your booking and spend at least 100 hours in a program penalty time room withing 60 days of booking. The first 7 days within booking have an hourly bonus of 100%, the second 7 days an hourly bonus of 80%...Serve your time as quickly as possible to serve less time.
With a penalty time room system there is no need to pay for food, medical care or defense counsels for arrested enrollees.
Shoplifters and Homeless should be bused into the Commie Upper West Side.
Drug stores will likely turn into system similar to drive up windows at banks. You stay outside, tell them what you want, show ID when required, pay, and then a small door opens with your drugs (after being sealed from the inside).
Humiliating as hell and also dangerous for the customers, but you get what you vote for.
“It says even more about you. Staying in a shite-hole city like this.”
And, probably more importantly, for voting in the bastards that did this to NYC. In other words, voting Dem year after year after year after year, all the while watching the deterioration all around you.
It is amazing that many people simply are incapable of connecting the Cause and Effect dots.
about year ago was at that corner - standing there when one of the local zombies walked out and began asking me
“Do you know John Gotti” :Do you know John Gotti”
Started backing away and drawing knife I carry as part of my tools ready to go John Wick on this mutant if tried anything
Stick to NJ now
stores are going to have to go to an online shopping model.
You go to the website, pick the items and put them into your ‘cart’... Pay, and then go pick them up.
In-store shoppers pick the items and bag them for you. No one goes into the store.
Just now, as I came home, for the first time I noticed guys standing around the supermarket checking out what the shoppers were up to.
I think maybe all this publicity about shoplifting is giving more people the idea that they can get away with it.
But just a suggestion-—get in a lot of tanning booth time first. Maybe some quick tan creme, too. Protection against having to obey shoplifting laws pales in comparison with other groups, if you get my drift.
I’m surprised democrats don’t start bragging about how much time they are saving that used to be given away for good behavior before parole. Consider it a social justice paycheck.
