Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville on Tuesday said, simply and for the first time, that "white nationalists are racists."
That remark to reporters marked a reversal from days of controversial comments to the contrary, which had drawn criticism from Democratic leaders and head-scratching from some of Tuberville's Republican colleagues.
Earlier on Tuesday, the senator told ABC News that white nationalists shouldn't all be labeled as "racist" while also insisting he opposes racism.
Tuberville, a former college football coach first elected in 2020, had been pressed on his stance by ABC's Senior Congressional Correspondent Rachel Scott, who asked him, "Can you explain why you continue to insist that white nationalists are American?"
Scott was referring to commets Tuberville made first in May and then again earlier this week, after he was initially asked about military readiness and whether white nationalists should be able to serve.
"Listen, I'm totally against racism. And if Democrats want to say that white nationalists are racist, I'm totally against that, too," he told Scott on Tuesday, hours before changing his view.

Bunch of BS.
Yes it is.
What a tube steak.
How effing stupid is this. I’m white and I’m a nationalist.
Hard to believe how vapidly partisan the leftwing news media has become.
Tuberville is dumb as a sack of rocks. He’s an embarrassment to the state of Alabama imo….
How about Black Nationalists, Mexican Nationalists, Jewish Nationalists, are they also “racist” or is the “racist” label only applied to “White Nationalists”?
I call bullsh*t...Tommy aint no crawyfish
Coward, the left volunteer on us being cowards and we don’t disappoint them...
That is what I've been discussing with my wife (she's Chinese-American and dislikes what some Chinese groups do). BLM members are racist, because they promote blackness at the detriment of other races. Same goes for La Raza members, they're racist. Likewise for other groups that promote Chinese, Korean, Arab values. They're all racist. White Nationalists should not be targeted for criticism unless one is willing to criticize other racial groups.
It is human nature to gather with your own kind and promote those values you're familiar with. Now if your group attacks and harms people of different races, now that's evil racism. (Blacks come to mind, always in the news.)
I had a white student that came down from Vermont to take concentrated Physics and Chemistry at Memphis State for the Summer. He said he didn’t have a racist bone in his body and chastised the rest of us for our beliefs. He got a part time job at a liquor store on Chelsea Avenue in Memphis and before the semester was over he was racist.
There is no such thing. A democrat strawman.
FBI hoods got to him.
Disappointed with Tuberville caving on this.
“White nationalist” is a buzz word that dog whistles “racist” to racists. Tommy is allowing the left to define terms - always a mistake.
What?
In the history of this country the real white racists were the KKK and democRATS all. Tuberville is just another RINO coward. White nationalists are folks who believe in MAGA, patriots .
I am white and I am an unapologetic nationalist - I dearly love this nation, its ideals and what it HS done to save my family from mass murder and effective serfdom in Europe and Russia during the 29th century. But not racist.
Those claiming that all whites who are nationalists are, because of that combination, racist are, themselves, the actual racist. Either that, or they are knowingly lying because they are a bunch of cucks.
Uh….has done,,,
20th century.
I guess that I’m a fat-fingered white nationalist. :>)
That is a very strange question. What else would they be? French? Russian? Burmese? If you accept the current line that America is a white racist country, surely that would make white nationalists and white racists very American.
Just exactly what a "white nationalist" is, isn't obvious. The media is in the business of throwing labels around. They ought to be called to account and asked to explain what they mean by them. But if you are a politician you better know what they want those labels to mean or you can get into trouble.
I wish he would have said, “people who self identify as White Nationalists,”; makes a world of difference, who applies the label …
