I had a white student that came down from Vermont to take concentrated Physics and Chemistry at Memphis State for the Summer. He said he didn’t have a racist bone in his body and chastised the rest of us for our beliefs. He got a part time job at a liquor store on Chelsea Avenue in Memphis and before the semester was over he was racist.
As I said, there is evil racism. Probably working at the liquor store he encountered the evil racism blacks. There are many degrees of separation between the evil kind, and the rest of us who are wary - should that be called racism?
I'm very wary of my surroundings in order to avoid being a target. That comes from multiple encounters where I've been jumped and beaten, threatened with knives and guns, and had family and friends robbed and assaulted. Having said that, I have had close black friends, neighbors, co-workers, blacks on my team I managed, and even blacks married into extended family (my sister's son married a black woman and I like her). No one should say they don't have a racist bone in their body, if they're wary of another race in order to survive.
