Walmart is closing a batch of stores in 2023 — here's the full list

Walmart is closing 22 retail locations across the US this year, including four in Chicago, citing poor financial performance at each.

In the latest move, Walmart confirmed Monday that it plans to close a store in Richmond, Virginia, on July 28. "We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Brook Road Neighborhood Market location," Walmart spokesperson Felicia McCranie said in an emailed statement to Insider.

"We look forward to serving them at our other stores in the surrounding communities including our Brook Road Supercenter just two miles away and on walmart.com." McCranie added.

The recent closures follow a trend of Walmart closing a handful of stores across various states each year, with the company saying that the stores are "underperforming" or falling short of financial expectations. In the case of Chicago, the retailer revealed in April that the four targeted stores "lose tens of millions of dollars a year."

8 in Illinois alone. Underperforming = repeatedly looted.

It’s ultimately a ‘loss prevention’ issue but mentioning it will be avoided to avoid ‘racism’ allegations.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon did tell CNBC that theft in stores was a problem in an interview last December and that closing stores was an option.

4720 S. Cottage Grove Ave, Chicago, 2844 N. Broadway, Chicago

The 47th and Cottage Grove location was bold. I recalled there was a Schnucks there, but it is on the west edge of civilization. I wouldn't go there at night.

The Broadway location was safer in the daytime, but I recall the Jewel had a parking garage, and the heroin attacks wit out in the street in broad daylight in 1984.

The problem becomes the looters will find new stores in new areas to loot. It’s what they do.

Interesting. Both big red states that featured a closing were “Market concept” types of stores. Not sure what that means.

I was not in the least bit surprised to see that many in Illinois.

Seems like a bad strategy. The consumers do not magically disappear because you closed your store. If the “sacrificial” stores are not kept open I would assume the issue just spreads to the next nearest stores?

One that caught my attention was Pinellas Park,FL. It's near Tampa/St Pete and it's a run down, nasty place. I'll bet there's a good bit of shoplifting there.

As for $hitcago...no need to comment there!

. . . including four in Chicago, citing poor financial performance at each.

Thats newspeak for so much theft that actual sales can't eat the costs.

But we all know that and it would be racist to say it.

The Walmart store on Reisterstown Road in Baltimore (rather a more suburban setting) was closed as well, about a year and a half ago. I imagine it was due to shoplifting as well, since customers were treated like suspects at all times. I was only in the store a couple of times, which was enough for me. The atmosphere was just too lowlife for me. There’s a reason there’s a website called “Walmart People”, featuring the weirdos to be found there.

“The consumers do not magically disappear because you closed your store.”

I think the idea is the law enforcement exists at the next nearest store.

I wonder how long before someone complains of disparate impact.

“Market concept” types of stores.

These are WalMart lites. Much like typical grocery store. Food and a few household essentials.

No electronics sections, automotive, clothing, hardware etc.

The one closing in TX is a ‘Neighborhood Market’. Those stores - the few that I’ve been in - are creepy.

Darkened lighting, poor selection of items, laid out strangely....etc.

Looting costs too much. And the company doesn’t have insurance on this. They buy products that the local people just steal. When you lose a million+ a year on looting, it’s time to close the store

I wouldn’t mind seeing all Walmart stores close. Does anyone remember the founder, Sam Walton, and his pledge to sell made in the USA products? Well, his kids have taken over now, and it’s WOKE. They even stopped selling the My Pillow brand.

The one in Overland Park is close to where we used to live. It’s a nice neighborhood and the store seemed clean and safe.
