America’s never-ending quest for inclusion has now turned its attention to supposedly offensive school nicknames and mascots. Native American names are a particular target of this ire—Braves, Warriors, Chiefs together with individual tribes such as the Seminoles or Illini.
The latest installment of this “anti-hate” push has occurred in New York State where these purportedly offensive names, logos, and mascots were banned in public schools as of April of 2023, or schools will lose state funding. As of March 2022, 133 New York schools had such Indian names and New York is hardly alone in exorcising allegedly hateful stereotypes. According to one Native American organization, some 1900 US schools use Native American-themed names, while nine states have officially banned them,
Colleges have similarly been a battleground over allegedly offensive Native American names and logos. Some twenty-five have formally dropped their Indian names, In some instances schools heeded pressure and removed all references to Native American symbols. Elsewhere, Indian tribes permitted schools to retain the name, while in yet other instances schools initially avoided calls for dropping Indian names since there were no Indians to complain. This trend also includes professional sports teams such as the former Cleveland Indians who became the Cleveland Guardians.
Although the scrubbing of Native-American names has been widely opposed by parents and students at targeted schools, both educators and Indian organizations offer apparently compelling justifications. Richard Mills, former New York State Education Commissioner asserted that the mascots “can become a barrier to building a safe and nurturing school community and
improving academic achievement for all students.” When the American Psychological Association officially opposed these names in 2005, it based its opposition on a review of 26 studies asserting that this stereotypical naming has a negative impact on the mental health of Native Americans.

it’s stooopid...
the local sports teams were always The Senecas
now the “Lake Hawks”
BUT
it’s STILL called Seneca Lake...
make it make sense
“Indian”, “warriors’, “Chiefs” etc., are ENGLISH words not originating in America but England. It’s stupid ... First Peoples never heard these words until white man told them. These people are insane. Stick them in the looney bin.
The way to avoid this nonsense is to make a deal with the tribes. License names, chants, slogans, and imagery from a tribe. This supports tribal artists, and gives the tribe leaders a little extra spending money in exchange for names and logos that they certify are inoffensive.
Then, when the whining whiners complain about it, direct them to the tribal office.
Their village was called “sinnekens.” The Dutch and English called them the name “Seneca” from the Roman Philosopher of the same name. Blame the Romans, Dutch and English. It ain’t even what they called themselves. This is all Pure BS.
“Mohawk” was the name given by English from the Narragansett tribe who called Mohawks “Mohowagsuck” meaning “cannibals”. It ain’t even the same word
More BS. “Mohawk” is a word invented by the English.
so no reason to change it then
their name is the Haudenosaunee...
Iroquois is a FRENCH word meaning “black snakes”
“Oneida’ is what the English called the tribe known as “Ontyota a ka”.
“Skarueh” is what the Tuscarora called themselves. It derives from the SPANISH language.
“Sioux” is a FRENCH word.
Gimme a break.Already.

Love your post, I have some Nanaimo in our family. Proud of it, but this was not always true. My grandmother did her best to pass as a white American although one look at her and you knew she was of the “First Peoples”.
She married a US Citizen when she was 16 in British Columbia and was brought to Washington State.
While at college, (Cal Berkeley) we were rivals of the Stanford Indians. Now they are the Cardinals and their mascot is a tree. What is happening?
About 30 years ago or so one high school near where I grew up was called the Redskins. In a fit of political correctness they changed it to the Reds.
I guess it’s better to be communists.
rather the Ysonnundawa o no of the Haudenosaunee
It's not the Injuns that are bitching about the names; it white liberal morons.
The First Nations people I know laugh at this cra cra stuff
Florida State’s Seminoles are next.
Waaaaay too late. Should have thought of it in the 70’s
Political correctness has been around for 30+ years. It is a tool of the cultural marxists.
Great movie. The sequel sucks, but the original is a great movie. Wesley Snipes to Charlie Sheen: “What club you been with?” “California Penal League.” “How’d you get there?” “Stole a car.”
