America’s never-ending quest for inclusion has now turned its attention to supposedly offensive school nicknames and mascots. Native American names are a particular target of this ire—Braves, Warriors, Chiefs together with individual tribes such as the Seminoles or Illini.
The latest installment of this “anti-hate” push has occurred in New York State where these purportedly offensive names, logos, and mascots were banned in public schools as of April of 2023, or schools will lose state funding. As of March 2022, 133 New York schools had such Indian names and New York is hardly alone in exorcising allegedly hateful stereotypes. According to one Native American organization, some 1900 US schools use Native American-themed names, while nine states have officially banned them,
Colleges have similarly been a battleground over allegedly offensive Native American names and logos. Some twenty-five have formally dropped their Indian names, In some instances schools heeded pressure and removed all references to Native American symbols. Elsewhere, Indian tribes permitted schools to retain the name, while in yet other instances schools initially avoided calls for dropping Indian names since there were no Indians to complain. This trend also includes professional sports teams such as the former Cleveland Indians who became the Cleveland Guardians.
Although the scrubbing of Native-American names has been widely opposed by parents and students at targeted schools, both educators and Indian organizations offer apparently compelling justifications. Richard Mills, former New York State Education Commissioner asserted that the mascots “can become a barrier to building a safe and nurturing school community and
improving academic achievement for all students.” When the American Psychological Association officially opposed these names in 2005, it based its opposition on a review of 26 studies asserting that this stereotypical naming has a negative impact on the mental health of Native Americans.

Remove the Indian, Keep The Land!
Political correctness should be sent back to hell where it belongs.
Their fans will be known as wards.
It’s been a long time since I even cared about such things in sports. But, the “Guardians?” I thought they were still the Indians. I guess I’ll have to mothball my copy of “Major League” with Tom Beringer.
“Removing Indian names and mascots is a war on Western culture that celebrates masculine virtues”
The truth is revealed
Went to dinner at a local Redman's Club many years ago. There was a chief present. ....maybe 50 years ago.
They care about one thing...MONEY!!
First, it was Confederate statues.
Then, it was Columbus, Washington, Jefferson, Teddy Roosevelt, and Andrew Jackson.
Now, it’s the original inhabitants of the continent.
Who, or what, is acceptable to the screeching mobs?
Who is going to be first to adopt then name” PUSSYWHIPS ?
That movie is broadcast every now and then. I wonder how long it will be before it opens with a disclaimer "The following movie contains a team name that might be offensive to some viewers".
bkmk
I heard that the Edmonton Eskimos in Canadian football, became the Edmonton Elks.
I have asked some people, seriously, not joking, as to why some ethnic type names are deemed offensive, such as Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, Edmonton Eskimos, and why some are ok, such as Boston Celtics, Minnesota Vikings, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
I talk to people about that, they laugh and think I’m just joking. But I wonder what are the standards for this?
The Seminole Indians in Florida have long supported the Florida State Seminole sports teams, for example. So presumeably that one is ok, because the tribe supports them using the name.
So when is an ethnic identifier ok, and when is it offensive?
Why are the Chicago Black Hawks still using such a name?
There doesn’t seem to be consistent standards with this.
“I have asked some people, seriously, not joking, as to why some ethnic type names are deemed offensive, such as Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, Edmonton Eskimos, and why some are ok, such as Boston Celtics, Minnesota Vikings, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.”
Good point.
If you think about it they are erasing certain ethic groups but leaving European ethnic groups.
Do they even realize that.
30. Discredit the American founding fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."
31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of "the big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over. [Note: Obliterating the American past, with its antecedents in principles of freedom, liberty and private ownership is a major goal of the communists then and now.]
My ancestry is Scots/Irish and AniYunWiya (Cherokee)...
Personally, I think all this complaining about nicknames and mascots is being done by people who need to have something to bitch about because their own lives are worth little...
Soon this will affect Apache Helicopters, Tomahawk missiles, Kiowa Helicopters, etc. I would think that in many ways Indigenous tribes would be honored that people in the US hold their strength and heritage like this, as powerful warriors. Symbols of this continent.
However, Southern whites do not have the exception applied for Northern ethnic whites. Throughout Texas and I assume the rest of the South, high school and college teams with names like the Rebels have dropped those names and any visual association with Southern heritage, like the Southern Cross flag or the Confederate uniform.
“The cases of the Minnesota Vikings and the Boston Celtics are reflective of the role of the Scandinavians and the Irish in their respective states or cities.”
Ok makes some sense.
Not trying to be contrary or funny, but by that logic should not one of Baltimore’s major sport teams be the Hutus or Tutsi?
Replace them all with names such as “earthworms, maggots, and slugs.” Or maybe we could just use numbers. Tonight’s matchup is between the Boston 18’s and the New York 11’s!
Oh wait math is racist so we can’t use numbers.
