I heard that the Edmonton Eskimos in Canadian football, became the Edmonton Elks.
I have asked some people, seriously, not joking, as to why some ethnic type names are deemed offensive, such as Cleveland Indians, Washington Redskins, Edmonton Eskimos, and why some are ok, such as Boston Celtics, Minnesota Vikings, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
I talk to people about that, they laugh and think I’m just joking. But I wonder what are the standards for this?
The Seminole Indians in Florida have long supported the Florida State Seminole sports teams, for example. So presumeably that one is ok, because the tribe supports them using the name.
So when is an ethnic identifier ok, and when is it offensive?
Why are the Chicago Black Hawks still using such a name?
There doesn’t seem to be consistent standards with this.
My ancestry is Scots/Irish and AniYunWiya (Cherokee)...
Personally, I think all this complaining about nicknames and mascots is being done by people who need to have something to bitch about because their own lives are worth little...
Soon this will affect Apache Helicopters, Tomahawk missiles, Kiowa Helicopters, etc. I would think that in many ways Indigenous tribes would be honored that people in the US hold their strength and heritage like this, as powerful warriors. Symbols of this continent.
Replace them all with names such as “earthworms, maggots, and slugs.” Or maybe we could just use numbers. Tonight’s matchup is between the Boston 18’s and the New York 11’s!

“Indian”, “warriors’, “Chiefs” etc., are ENGLISH words not originating in America but England. It’s stupid ... First Peoples never heard these words until white man told them. These people are insane. Stick them in the looney bin.
The way to avoid this nonsense is to make a deal with the tribes. License names, chants, slogans, and imagery from a tribe. This supports tribal artists, and gives the tribe leaders a little extra spending money in exchange for names and logos that they certify are inoffensive.
Then, when the whining whiners complain about it, direct them to the tribal office.
About 30 years ago or so one high school near where I grew up was called the Redskins. In a fit of political correctness they changed it to the Reds.
I guess it’s better to be communists.
