Foreign policy “experts” vocally in favor of Ukraine called on Wednesday for bringing the embattled nation into NATO, which many say would risk a direct NATO-Russia war.
Alexander Vindman, who was at the center of former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment, former Russia ambassador Michael McFaul, former Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ), and other foreign policy “experts” released an op-ed on Politico Magazine ahead of the NATO summit:

Ukraine doesn’t even qualify, as it is presently at war (an automatic exclusion). So, the NATO protocol for admission would have to be rewritten, and all existing members would have to agree on it being rewritten, and all would have to agree on the new protocol (would have to get rid of the mandatory unanimous vote for admission of new members).
None of that is going to happen.

I think I’ve read NATO has provisions disallowing such jiggery-pokery. It’s akin to trying to buy fire insurance whilst the house is already burning.

Sweden isn’t in NATO now because it has not met the protocol; one condition of which requires UNANIMOUS consent of all the existent members.

If Sweden was going to do that, it would also have to ban burning the Bible, the Torah, the Talmud, the Bhagavad Gita; and a host of other religious texts; and, along with that, free speech. Sweden is too secular to muzzle its people’s free speech. And, you forgot Hungary: Hungary has also opposed Sweden’s entry into NATO. And, last time I looked, Hungary is not a Moslem country. Rather, Hungary’s opposition to Sweden joining NATO is strictly secular in nature. Then, there’s that condition in the NATO protocol that precludes countries that are at war from joining NATO.

In any event, I am far more familiar with Turkey than you’ll ever be, kid. I spent 1971-1973 in Turkey. And I am on record here on FR saying Turkey has been playing the West and the East against each other for generations, with Turkey’s goal being to squeeze out of whichever side the best deal for Turkey. Turkey is about as untrustworthy as Russia is.
