Justice Sonia Sotomayor blasted the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to back a Christian wedding website designer’s choice not to provide services to gay couples, calling the decision “profoundly wrong” in a scathing dissenting argument read from the bench.
“Today, the Court, for the first time in its history, grants a business open to the public a constitutional right to refuse to serve members of a protected class,” Sotomayor wrote.
The associate justice harkened back to the civil rights and women’s rights movements in her dissent, suggesting that in recent years, gender and sexual orientation minority groups have faced “backlash to the movement for liberty and equality.”

“Protected classes” and the laws that protect them don’t take priority over Constitutional rights, which are endowed by the Creator and can’t be taken away.
Lets see ... who else is a protected class...
drug addicts
murderers
psychopaths
illegal immigrants
diddlers
LGBTQ arent alone....
I feel gay today.
Now I’m a protected class.
There are no protected "classes". We should all be equal under the law.
Yep, they became a “protected class” when the Supreme Court allowed Obama to change the meaning of “sex” in the antidiscrimination laws to also mean “sexual orientation”.
But this could work both ways, as Christians are also a “protected class”, since it is illegal to discriminate based on religion.
So, for example, some enterprising Christians might contact gay bars who offer space for rent for parties and such, and ask to rent their space to hold Christian events, like a “Prayer Service for the Damned Souls of Homosexuals Lost in Lust and Pride”. And if the venue refuses....
Sotomayor is a low-IQ charlatan.
So only protected classes have Constitutional Rights? Oh I does not good to an organization to tear it down from the inside!
“We should all be equal under the law.”
All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.
There should be zero protected classes, period.
Do we have protected classes? Is it in the Constitution? What are the protected classes?
She mentions “movement for liberty and equality.” Does a protected class get equality, or something more than equality?
Let’s get real. Compare “a Christian wedding website designer’s choice not to provide services to gay couples” to what might happen to a Jew wearing a yarmulke going into a Muslim community. There is violence as in “he looked at me funny” and there is violence as in being beaten to death. We are letting poor metaphors distract us from reality.
Yup, by their own admission. Gender is fluid, sexuality is a spectrum, it can change like the wind on a whim.
“Scathing?” She’s too dumb to be scathing. Just reeee…
So - having just read Sotomayor’s wiki page - she was - by her own admission - an affirmative action student at Princeton, and an affirmative action student at Yale law school. So now she’s the affirmative action addition to SCOTUS. Says everything you need to know about affirmative action.
A rug muncher wanting special rights for her kind. What a surprise!
Justice Sonia Sotomayor saw liberty in action and doesn’t like it one bit for years the Marxist left have tried to twist the laws to degrade America.
She’s a great example of how having “protected classes” dumbs down and undermines a society.
Is she wasn’t a member of two protected classes, she would never have gotten close to the Supremes.
“Protected Class” - imagine a Supreme Court Justice using such a term.
Another sign of the death of the Constitution and Death of the Republic.
So many foolishly subscribe to the ascientific, foolish, baseless Lady Gaga “Born This Way” theory on same-sex attraction that Sotomayor can happily prattle on, confident that she won’t be laughed out of the room.
I’ve never quite understood the “you need to make us a cake” or “you need to design us a web-site” issues.
Some people try to equate that to “sit in the back of the bus”. They are not even related.
They weren’t refused service
They asked for a product that the company doesn’t have.
