Cancer drug shortage ‘is absolute lunacy,’ doctors say: ‘Lives will be shortened’

A shortage of cancer drugs is forcing doctors to confront the reality that some patients could die needlessly.

“Lives will be shortened,” Dr. Patrick Timmins III, a gynecologic oncologist at Women’s Cancer Care Associates in Albany, New York, told the Atlantic. “A lot of people are going to be hurt,” he added. “I’ve been doing this forever, and this is absolute lunacy.”

Some of these are nonprescription drugs, like cold and flu medicines. But life-saving drugs for cancer patients are also not available. The drug shortage is so extreme that it’s a national security threat, according to a recent Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee report.

The causes of the drug shortage are varied, but most experts point to the glaring gaps in the drug supply chain as a primary cause. One foreign manufacturer, Indian drugmaker Intas Pharmaceuticals, was cited during a Food and Drug Administration inspection in November 2022 for numerous safety and quality-control problems. After their manufacturing facility closed, the world was suddenly caught in a supply chain nightmare, as Intas was a primary source of chemotherapy drugs.

We were too happy to obliterate (via a variety of mechanisms) a relative meritocracy (corporately speaking) an American company that could perform and create, and replace it with a third world manufacturer we have little control over except for canceling the ability to sell in this country.

This has happened in nearly every sector of our society.

Dandelion root, hydrogen peroxide on the skin. Cut sugar right out. Eat red meat and fruit. Bye cancer industry.

I could see tangibles being moved to other nations. I didn’t
like it, but it wasn’t like someone would be harmed if they
couldn’t get a new microwave or television.

Medications? Some folks should be lined up and...

Buckshot files a pretty good complaint with the people who caused this. You’re gonna die from cancer anyway? Talk loud.

About 10 years ago i was working out at my gym speaking with a doctor. He told me hospitals in the area were pissed because they were charging and receiving $1500 to $2000 for each chemo treatment from insurance companies.

The insurance companies found out how much the drug cost to produce and promptly started paying $20 for each treatment. Hence these drugs were no longer profitable for big pharma

I told someone with terminal cancer about IP6, but no interest. I haven’t heard about it in years, and that article is from 2005. Are they still making it?

My wife, diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer five years ago, would likely be dead today without carboplatin and three other chemo drugs. The oncologist said there was absolutely nothing she did or could have done that would have prevented it.

At least 80% of the drugs used in this country are made and imported from India and China. They are also starting to build manufacturing facilities in Africa.

Actually quite a number if drugs can be bought in India and shipped here, and they are much cheaper. Example, Farxiga cost about $600 here without insurance and with, depending on your drug plan, with a co-pay of as much as $100 a month. In India you can buy a year’s worth for $72.00 plus shipping.

Some meds I take I buy from there, cheaper even with a drug plan.
