Conservative leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis won Greece’s national elections on Sunday (25 June) with a clear majority, securing a second term during which he vowed to bring about major reforms to transform the country.
With nearly all the votes counted, Mitsotakis’s New Democracy party obtained a score of over 40.5%, well ahead of the leftist Syriza party led by former premier Alexis Tsipras, which scored less than 18%.
The margin is the widest for the conservatives in almost 50 years, as voters rewarded them for nursing Greece back to economic health after a crippling debt crisis.
“The people have given us a safe majority. Major reforms will proceed rapidly,” Mitsotakis said, adding that he had “ambitious” targets for a new term that could “transform” Greece.
The 55-year-old former McKinsey consultant and Harvard graduate, who steered the EU nation from the coronavirus pandemic back to two consecutive years of strong growth, had already scored a thumping win in an election just a month ago.

"The Spartans party, which said Greece was threatened by uncontrolled migration, was the surprise of the campaign. It was set to gain 4.7% of the vote and up to 13 seats in parliament, based on the early results.
The group was catapulted from relative obscurity after support from Ilias Kasiadiaris, the frontman of the now-banned Golden Dawn far-right party. His own party was barred from the elections and he endorsed the Spartans from jail."

I hate to be pessimistic, but if the reforms include raising the age to get a pension or cutting back on the generosity of the Welfare State, there will be riots and this party will be out.

How can they know that? It’s only been a day. What about the mail-in ballots, the provisional ballots, all the ballots without signatures, and the boxes of ballots stored in the basement of the far-left party’s headquarters? By now, there must be a lot of cemeteries in Greece, surely those residents’ votes have not yet been counted...

The margin is the widest for the conservatives in almost 50 years, as voters rewarded them for nursing Greece back to economic health after a crippling debt crisis. Too bad the stupid US Republican party won't learn any lessons from this.

The only thing they CAN do, which would not outrage their base, would be to very visibly stop illegal immigration and expel the migrants.
But that would incur sanctions from the EU bureaucrats.
Are they willing to tell the EU to shove it?
