White House Warns Europe On Greek Showdown Washington blames Europe for the lack of global recovery and is losing its patience with EMU creditor states that fail to pull their weight

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard 13 Feb 2015

The Obama administration has leapt to the defence of Greece, warning Germany and Europe’s creditor powers that they must meet Athens half-way to avert a potentially dangerous rupture and a euro break-up. Caroline Atkinson, the US deputy-national security adviser, said the eurozone authorities had imposed the main burden of adjustment on the weaker deficit states and should do more to accept their share of responsibility for the euro crisis. “They have asymmetric rules. They need to make it socially fairer,” she said.

“It is important for creditors to take into account that Greece has had a very sharp drop in incomes, real wages, and output as well as a big rise in unemployment,” she told a gathering at Chatham House in London. “Greece has moved into primary surplus. How much more fiscal consolidation is necessary?” she said. The comment will be music to the ears of Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, who wants a cut in the EU-IMF Troika target for the primary surplus to 1.5pc of GDP from 3pc this year and 4.5pc next year.

Reminds me of Mars Attacks when Rod Steiger, firing his pistols, gets shrunk down to nothing & stomped on.

I'm betting that this was discussed with Merkel when she was at the White House on Monday (?).

And that he's stabbing her in the back.

No doubt. And if she wants to stay silent about it and continue to lick Obama's zoomba shoes like Cameron, then she and Europe can rot.

I wonder if that was instigated by Russia and China’s interest in Greece. Germany can’t budge. But conspiring to get Obozo’s mouth involved may sow some confusion.

It’s not Greece that they have to worry about dropping out of the EU, it’s Germany. Germans seem to by getting more and more angry about having to support the rest of the EU and a change in government could end up with them going their own way, maybe with just the Germanic language countries that aren’t in trouble and cutting out the Romance language countries in the south.

What an empty suit! This is up to Brussels, not Obama.

The more out of control things spin, the more the WH squeals nonsensical blather.

Economic tough love gets an economy through its illness faster BECAUSE it insures the economy is/must take the right steps to correct the imbalances that caused the illness. Trying to merely soften the symptoms and never applying enough strong doses of medicine, provides temporary relief but keeps the illness hanging on longer.

What the heck does Greek debt have to do with US national security?

Translated into English this means, "You have to much money and they do not have enough. I will take your money and distribute it fairly." Karl Marx also said this.
