The case for DeSantis over Trump
The Washington Times ^ | June 24, 2023 | Michael McKenna

Posted on 06/24/2023 6:29:35 PM PDT by TBP

the Trump campaign needs to be aware of an emerging thread of data that suggests that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis may do better in the general election.

New survey results from Public Opinion Strategies build on previous results and are starting to frame a coherent story about how the general election might look with different Republican candidates.

The new survey results indicate that Mr. DeSantis would do better than Mr. Trump in the general election in specific battleground states. For example, in Georgia, Mr. DeSantis leads President Biden by 3 percentage points in a general election matchup.

In the same matchup, Mr. Trump loses Georgia to Mr. Biden by 3 points.

In Pennsylvania, Mr. DeSantis runs 2 points better than Mr. Biden while Mr. Trump runs 4 points behind Mr. Biden.

Back in April, Mr. Trump trailed Mr. Biden in Pennsylvania by the same 4 percentage points. Mr. DeSantis led Mr. Biden in Pennsylvania by 3 points.

In Arizona, the current spread between the candidates appears greater. Mr. DeSantis runs 6 points better than Mr. Biden while Mr. Trump runs 3 points behind the president. That is also a greater margin than was evident in polling done in April.

Those results indicated that Mr. DeSantis would defeat Mr. Biden nationally by 3 percentage points while Mr. Trump would lose nationally by 3 percentage points — the same margin by which he lost in 2020.

No republican wins in 2024 unless the the republicans figure out out how to vote in the context of the new game that democrats started in 2020.

“Criticizing governors like DeSantis for opening their states too early.”

For the most part, Trump pushed governors to re-open sooner rather than later. There was an instance with Georgia, where he criticized Kemp for re-opening nail salons as soon as he did, but for the most part, Trump’s criticisms usually went the other way (i.e. criticizing states for remaining in lockdown too long.)

https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/28/politics/donald-trump-ron-desantis-florida/index.html

From the article:

Trump has encouraged governors to be aggressive in their reopening plans, telling state leaders in a conference call on Monday to “seriously consider” reopening schools if it’s safe.

Some governors have been less willing to loosen restrictions on businesses and gatherings as testing continues to lag and outbreaks persist.

DeSantis, visiting a hospital in Tampa on Monday, said the return to normal would be “methodical, slow and data driven.”

“Supporting Disney”

This is one of the lamest talking points from Trump’s critics and is usually an indication that they’ve run out of ideas. “Supporting Disney” is sufficiently vague to be almost meaningless. The implication is that Trump supported Disney’s protestations of Florida’s “Don’t say gay” bill that was passed by DeSantis. That’s simply untrue. Trump spoke out against DeSantis’s protracted feud with Disney as being poorly thought out and counter-productive. He never expressed support for Disney’s activism on the legislation in question.

“Attacking DeSantis’s abortion law as being too harsh.’

Trump’s position on abortion has changed little since he took office. People are certainly free to disagree with his comments on the Florida abortion law, but his comments don’t represent a “lurch left’ on Trump’s part. Trump has his personal beliefs on abortion (allowing it in cases of rape, incest, or life of the mother and banning late term or “post term” abortions). Beyond that his position has been to let the people decide, not the courts. In that regards he has been successful by chosing SCOTUS justices who were willing to repeal Roe v Wade.

His abortion policy has been and remains less about imposing his exact criteria on the country and more about enabling the decision to be made by the states and the people generally without having the rules already swayed in favor of pro-abortionists. His criticism of the Florida law was more a belief by him that it was bad politics, not any sort of desire or committment on his part, to personally fight the legislation simply because he personally views it as too harsh.

DeSantis’ loss of political capital proves that he is not ready for prime time. He needs to wait his turn and learn and shut his yap before he does more damage to himself.

Removing Biden by impeachment is merely a forum to educate the sheeple about the criminalities.

Who the hell knows anymore?

They’ve destroyed any credibility of their polling ability, media, and everything else under the sun.

Some of it by accident. Most of it by design.

Only reason I posted the Breitbart article was to counter the propaganda coming from the article about DeSantis.

Everyone has an agenda and they’re going to make sure the results of anything they do or fund, wil support that agenda.

Sad thing is, in this age of having info at your fingertips, that people still consider polls and campaign ads in their decision making process.

You are very fobd of liberal talking points, aren’t you.

It is a liberal talking point that Trump has been the head of the GOP since he won the nomination in 2016?

You creepy Trump cultists certainly live in your own mentally deranged world.

Sorry, but Trump said he would negotiate a nationwide abortion limit that everyone could agree with.

That means more than the “harsh” 6-weeks that DeSantis enacted.

That is federal support for national protection of abortion.

Trump asked Feinstein to add the assault weapons ban to the school safety legislation.

You support a leftist.

Gee you think? Of course DeSantis will do better. It’s a rigged system. They need someone in there like DeSantis, a career lawyer and politician who has been indoctrinated into the uniparty. He’s been taught “This is the way things work in Washington son”. Trump blows up the entire uniparty scheme of playing perpetual good cop/bad cop with the Democrat and Republican parties. DeSantis won’t.

“Trump cultists” is another liberal talking point.

And the answer to your question is of course yes. The lefties have insisted for years that Trump leads the GOP when he does not.

“You support a leftist.”

O.K., I support a leftist - a leftist who got Roe v Wade overturned. A leftist who supports a federal ban on late term abortion and post-term “abortion”. As far as “negotiating a nationwide abortion limit that everyone could agree with”, where do you get the idea that any such deal, unlikely as it is, would prohibit states from passing their own, stricter limits?

As far as Trump asking Feinstein to add an assault weapons ban to the school safety legislation, I don’t know what you’re referring to.

BTW, while gun rights vs gun control and pro-abortion vs anti-abortion are usually framed in terms of left and right, the term “leftist” has a different meaning, referring to someone who believes in and supports a centrally administered collectivism. So even if Trump leaned left on these issues (which I dispute), that wouldn’t make him a leftist.

Because the only way the left would go along with more than 6-week limit (which Trump thinks is "too harsh) would be to protect abortion with federal law, which is what Biden is trying to do.

As far as Trump asking Feinstein to add an assault weapons ban to the school safety legislation, I don’t know what you’re referring to.

President Trump Asks Dianne Feinstein to Add ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban to School Safety Bill

I guess you are not well informed.

Did you know that Trump, In his book The America We Deserve, published in 2000:

“I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today’s internet technology we should be able to tell within 72 hours if a potential gun owner has a record.”

Bottom line: You support a pro-abortion, anti-gun leftist

“Because the only way the left would go along with more than 6-week limit (which Trump thinks is “too harsh) would be to protect abortion with federal law, which is what Biden is trying to do.”

Well I guess it won’t happen then, which goes to my original point of such a deal being unlikely. Trump gave no indication of what he would or wouldn’t accept for such a bill. His claim that he could negotiate a bill that everyone will be happy with is a pipe-dream but it shows a desire on his part to find a compromise - not to impose one..

“Bottom line: You support a pro-abortion, anti-gun leftist”

If Trump is pro-abortion, then he’s a pro-abortionist who enabled Roe v Wade to be overturned, and a pro-abortionist who wants to ban late-term and “post-term” abortions. What discredits your commentary is your penchant for simplistic black and white assessments of people you don’t like. Hence, “Trump is pro-abortion” rather than “Aside from wanting a federal ban on late term and post-term abortions, Trump believes in letting the people decide the abortion issue, not the courts”. The latter more accurately conveys Trump’s position on abortion and could hardly be called pro-abortion. But calling Trump pro-abortion is much simpler and dispenses with having to deal with all those pesky details.

And as far as Trump’s “support” for an assault-weapon ban, I assumed you were referring to the comments you linked to, but wanted to make sure, because those comments don’t support your claim (i.e. that Trump supports an assault weapons ban), and going back to comments made in 2000 doesn’t change that.

From the article:

“Sen. Feinstein talked about her bill and described the AR-15 as one of “the latest and newest weapons” to hit our streets. However, Eugene Stoner designed the AR-15 in the 1950s and Armalite began producing the gun during the 1960s. Are weapons from 60 years ago now considered “latest and newest”?

Nonetheless, Trump listened to Feinstein, heard from a few more gun control proponents—including Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL)—then looked back at Feinstein and told her she should add her bill to the Manchin/Toomey bill for consideration.”

I remember when this incident happened, following the clamor from the left for more gun control after the Parkland school shooting. I understood Trump’s comments for what they were. The left was attempting to use the shooting as a political weapon against Trump. It was in that context that Trump hosted a round table with lawmakers at the White House and made those comments.

His “reasonable” demeanor with Democrats totally deflated their PR campaign. Trump had a Republican House and Senate at the time that was never going to pass the kind of gun legislation Feinstein and the rest of her party were trying to pass. You don’t think Trump understood that? He told Feinstein to put the language into a bill that he knew had no chance of passing.

Now, 5 years later, you go searching for the soundbite that will “prove” that Trump wants to ban assault weapons, while ignore all the pro-2nd amendment words and actions that indicate otherwise.

Trump is pro-abortion and anti-assault weapons.

If you support him, you are not a conservative.
