For the past two years, my wife and I have spent a few winter weeks on Florida’s Sanibel Island, an amazing place — except for last year. Last year, Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc on the island, destroying the Sanibel Causeway, a critical bridge that connects the island’s residents and businesses to the mainland. It was truly a disaster.
But Florida’s governor (and now presidential candidate) Ron DeSantis stepped up. Realizing the importance of this road to the local economy, he marshalled both federal and state resources and oversaw a temporary reconstruction of the bridge that had it back up in operation in an astonishing 15 days.
This isn’t the first time a governor has embodied the qualities of leadership. In 1994, California Gov. Pete Wilson oversaw reconstruction of the I-10 highway after a portion was destroyed by the Northridge earthquake in a mere 84 days. This was after he was told that it could take as much as 26 months. The same happened just five years before in California to then-Gov. George Deukmejian, when the Bay Bridge collapsed as a result of an earthquake in San Francisco. That bridge was back up in operation in only a month.

It’s Biden Country, it will get top-priority.
I’ll just put this out there; Shapiro could build a bridge over a crater on the moon and I wouldn’t vote for him.
Too late.
It’s Philadelphia. Incompetence, graft, kickbacks, and corruption will get top priority. Fixing the bridge is secondary.
Shapiro is steaming dog-crap, no matter what he does.
Ping!
Why is there so much symbolism given to repairing a bridge?
Why is this somehow supposed to be a crowning achievement of a political career?
I don’t think Josh has it in him to actually work at something.

Maybe he can have some commendation letters copied and delivered from NY

FReepmail me to be added to the list.
Filling the collapse area with glass aggregate for a quick fix while beginning long term reconstruction is incredible "outside the box" thinking for anyone...but especially for Democrats.
If that IS his moment to springboard him to the Presidency, then I know for sure it was a “designed play”.

I remember that there was a very substantial financial incentive for the contractor to finish early. That financial incentive increased as the completion time decreased from years to months. There was a huge bonus for completion in under 90 days.
As I recall some Californians instead of being grateful about how quick the bridge was restored bitched about the size of the bonus.
There’s a PAC running an ad for Shapiro. It first makes the point that Shapiro beat Mastriano - badly. Then it goes on to anti-pollution initiatives (good political move in my estimation as opposed to climate nonsense) and then a soft socialism message is dropped. The latter is conveyed as “investing in jobs”. It really is forcibly confiscating your earnings and picking winners while creating losers. You have no choice how you hard earned money is invested. That’s left to people who never worked a real job in their lives and don’t know a thing about running a business.
The most important functions of any government are to protect the borders, deter crime, and build and maintain infrastructure. Any politician who can do those well will get my vote regardless of their positions on any other ‘cultural’ issues, any politician who doesn’t prioritize those is a worthless POS no matter how much I might like their positions on social and cultural issues.
Borders, roads, and bridges are the foundation of a civilization, stuff like ‘rights’ and ‘freedom’ are built upon those foundations.
Josh could not bild a berger to save his life.
Someone needs to parody this with Biden doing an online build a bear taking 3 years and 127 billion dollars but he got free shipping.
The article states that Shapiro is a “moderate democrat”. That is about as rare as the sasquatch and he is certainly no such thing. He was in on the 2020 steal and never bothered nor wanted to investigate.
in a similar situation here in ca, a contractor rebuilt the portion of the bridge in record time, with bonus if I recall correctly.
