Zelensky: Ukrainian loss could force US to choose between ‘collapse of NATO’ or war
The Hill via Yahoo ^ | June 15th, 2023 | Julia Shapero

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Thursday that a loss to Russia could ultimately force the U.S. to choose between the “collapse of NATO” or going to war.

“If Ukraine would lose, if Russia would occupy Ukraine, Russia will continue going towards Baltic countries, Poland, etcetera,” Zelensky said in an interview with NBC News. “And they will start war with one of the NATO countries, and at this moment, the U.S. would have to choose the collapse of NATO or go to war.”

The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are all members of NATO, as is Poland. An attack on any member of the alliance is “considered an attack against them all” under the treaty organization’s principle of collective defense.

Zelensky brought up the possibility of NATO involvement in response to the suggestion from some Republican politicians that the U.S. needs to limit its spending on the war in Ukraine.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — a 2024 Republican presidential candidate — previously described the war as a “territorial dispute,” while arguing that the U.S. should not become “further entangled” in the conflict. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) also warned last fall that a Republican majority in the House would not write a “blank check” to Ukraine for aid.

“Is any candidate or senator who thinks it costs too much for the United States to support Ukraine, is he ready to go to war, to fight, to send his kids,” Zelensky said Thursday, adding, “Because anyway, they will have to do this if NATO gets involved.”

“It’s not Ukraine against Russia,” he said. “Russia is fighting against the civilized world.”

dforest - Ukraine taught the ordinary Russians that they are not a first rate power, leave alone a superpower.

The ordinary Russians see a war carrying on for over a year and they see no one sending them weapons like Ukraine is getting, they see that the world is either shunning them or exploiting their weakness to get oil at 50% discounts.

Nonsense. The conflict in the region has gone on for decades. Ukraine used to be part of Russia. Whole that does not mean I think it ought be again it is certainly the point of view of many Rusduans that it ought be...something you omitted from your analogy. Also Zelennsky though he has not been the one to attack a foreign country like the tyrant Putin, is still a tyrant who even cancels opposition political parties.

"Zelensky has many faults, but he isn’t a tyrant. He has nowhere near that level of power."

I stand corrected. THIS is the funniest comment of the thread.

Then by that reckoning, we must return all of the United States to the indigenous peoples.

You have got to start doing stand-up comedy. This is the funniest $hit I’ve read since Rickles went belly up.

You’re wrong once again, as always.

NATO is globalist and the enforcement arm of international globalists. I want to keep THEM away by dismantling them. Something that should’ve been done 32 years ago.

Even if you were right about what you are saying about NATO. The facts are that NATO is not going away until the Russian threat goes away. That is why we should hope for defeat and dissolution of Russia. Nato has served as a bulwark of strength against aggressive communism, terrorism and oligarchical Putin Russia. Until then it is not and should not go away. The only way I see anyone agreeing with you is if they are Russian trolls. Are you a Russian troll?

“It is not ludicrous.

Putin is like the school bully who was the biggest kid in class in the 2nd grade and was twice as big as the other boys, but now is just a bit bigger — but he doesn’t realize things have changed”

It is wholly ludicrous and the above analogy childish.

“Resurgent Soviet Empire”. That’s a friggin’ joke.

And Russia has in now way infringed on US essential interests. In fact the opposite has occurred.

One has to be clinically insane to cite the below as evidence Ukraine is an actual country:

That’s bull - most countries in the world today haven’t existed for “much of history”:

Germany existed only from 1870 and was divided from 1945 to 1989
Italy and Greece existed only from the 1800s
the USA in its current form existed only from the 1800s after the acquisitions of Hawaii, Alaska, etc.
The UK exists in its current form as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland only since 1921
The Russian federation exists only since December 1991
Ukraine exists since April 1991 - so technically is a few months older than the Russian federation

If you think that makes your case you need to see a doctor.

“Biden prolly can’t lose this before the election”

Maybe not.

We have a problem with Republican neocons.

Actually it would be clinically insane - as you are doing - to say Ukraine isn’t an actual country because it hasn’t existed as a political entity for centuries.

By your definition, then you believe the USA in 1812 had no reason to exist.

Perhaps you still believe that?

Resurgent Tsarist empire is better for you?

Russia infringed on US essential interests by using military means to expand its territory, upending the peace that has existed since 1945

Field Marshall Zhukov - Putin and Xi are the globalists who want to control global trade and move it away from a multi-polar, capitalist world

NOpe, FieldMarshall Zhukov — NATO was moribund until Putin invaded Ukraine for the second time in February 2022

You’re not even an American.

You don’t get a vote in this matter.

And you most certainly don’t belong on this site.

Xi is a Communist. Putin is a Nationalist. You are a globalist. I am an American who wants us to stay out of foreign entanglements and to stop sending billions of dollars to pervert puppets like penis-piano playing Zelensky. If it means so much to you, you and your multiple spambot account comrades can go to The Ukraine to fight. But, again, not a one of you cowards will do that. You cheer every time an innocent Ukrainian, who doesn’t want to fight for the penis-piano playing pervert, gets abducted off the street and forcibly made to go to war for the globalist scum. Disgusting.

Lying over and over doesn’t make your position a factual one. NATO has not been “moribund” in any shape or fashion despite its needing to be dismantled for 32 years. They are a threat to world peace.

Did you know that at the time Ww2 began the American First Committee (of isolationists) which was Republican identified, was also suspected of having around 25% German/Nazi sympathizers. I would say today a similar percent of FR pro Russia/Putin posters are paid or active Russian trolls.

I see that you are really hung up on the anatomical-piano playing skills of Zelensky. So much so that you have to mention it twice. Fixation on such homo-erotic memes is often a sign that the person spouting them is fighting and hating those same tendencies in themselves. For some it is a sign they have had to fight off such attentions in the past. In either case, get help, you obviously could benefit from it. The other alternative is you are one of the 25% and happy you are getting a higher than normal ruble salary for spouting this garbage to naive genuine isolationists.
