The number of people taking a strong interest in the news has dropped by around a quarter in the last six years, a global study suggests.
A report by Oxford University's Reuters Institute says 48% of people around the world are very or extremely interested in the news - down from 63% in 2017.
In the UK, the proportion is lower than the global average at 43%.
More than a third of people (36%) worldwide say they sometimes or often actively avoid the news.

The news makes you stupid
Yes, maybe us commoners are just sick and tired of being constantly lied to. Particularly from those few remaining sources that were once deemed mostly reliable.
It’s not just a coincidence either. I think MSM uses Fake news to promote their woke, democrat, deep state agenda.
Fox was such a bastion of relatively unbiased coverage, now I’m not even sure about them anymore (since Tucker).
Its because people rightly don’t trust the b@st@rds anymore.
It’s blatant propaganda not news that people are rejecting.
There is no “news”.
There is only propaganda.
People tune it out when they know they are being lied to...
Exactly - and Reuters won't call it that because they're a part of it.
Because people know it is complete Marxist propaganda and has absolutely no value.
Ya right...
As my daddy used to say... “If you insist on hitting yourself in the head with a hammer, don’t come complaining when you get a headache!”...
My Tagline explains why with every post.
False title. There is interest in news. But news in today’s America is unavailable. Contemporary media news outlets are staffed by lazy, corrupt, inept fools.
I think people would enjoy the news, but most people realize the media doesn’t provide news because they are not news, they are Leftist activists and people are tired of listening to their crap.
Lies are more persuasive when they include bits of truth in them. You can ferret out the truth bits from the propaganda, if you know how to look, and there’s enough of it.
How does this define “news”?
Propaganda outlets like Reuters?
Or actual sites where information is provided?
The 24/7 "cable news" networks killed it for me. I can't stand to watch any of that junk for any period of time and I don't know how others can either. All that noise and graphics with that nonstop text rolling across the bottom of the screen. Gives me a headache just thinking about it.
Still I'm well informed. It's pretty easy to curate your feed on Twitter to get the news of the day from reliable sources. Plus this here Free Republic is invaluable as any "breaking" news shows up here instantly and Freepers are usually pretty good about quickly separating the wheat from the chaff.
I do miss the local news but not much happens in my town anyhow.
Although I’m still interested in the news what I choose to read or hear has greatly dropped off...therefore my time is less untilized..... Too much junk news just as much a snake pit as twitter and social media can often be. Further the news pundits often make the news about themselves.
It is the fatigue from lack of truth and objectivity that people have tired of...
News in general or THEIR news?
