The organization that represents port terminal operators said over the weekend that coordinated actions by dock workers led to the shutdown of cargo operations at the Port of Seattle.
The Pacific Maritime Association stated in a tweet Saturday that disruptive actions by the International Longshore Warehouse Union, which represents the dock workers, have led to the stoppage of work at the port.
'On the first shift today, the ILWU refused to dispatch any longshore workers to container terminals,' said the PMA, which resulted in the port's shutdown.
'PMA will continue to provide updates on West Coast port operations, which are critical to our national supply chain and the country's economic well-being. West Coast ports account for roughly 12% of the nation's GDP,' read a statement from the group.
The port is one of several West Coast hubs that could be shuttered in the dispute and severely limit the nation's supply chain ahead of the busy back-to-school shopping season.

Trade makes up 12% of GDP. But half of that is with Mexico and Canada. It’s not going through West Coast ports.
Maybe all the west coast ports should just be Shut Down permanently
Meanwhile, the Transportation Secretary is too busy breastfeeding.
Speeding up automation.
Back to School , I’m still waiting for Summer , it’s freezing and raining every day here
He'll emerge when the story gets legs and ramble on and on and say absolutely nothing.
Over the last 15 years, LA Port has shot itself in the foot multiple times with strikes, ridiculous truck and air-quality rules, covid shut-downs, empty container storage, lack of space.
Houston especially has been the biggest beneficiary, and smaller eastern ports like Savannah and Jacksonville also
I’m sure all of Mexico’s west coast ports are open for business, just re-route all the shipping there until the unions decide to go back to work.
Just another Buttplugged success story.
Yeah, dropped down to 40 a few nights ago. Gotta love the North West.
I live in SE Alaska. From groceries to gasoline. EVERYTHING not produced locally comes through the port of Seattle.
This could be a problem if it goes on more than a few days.
Fear mongers at their best...school just ended on west coast
It is funny how so many on here seem to forget the supply chain issues of a few short weeks ago...
Be prepared, not scared FRiend
There’s the rub.
Trade is over 25% of GDP.
Looks like an opportunity for the underutilized Port of Grays Harbor. Vancouver is open for business too. The ports of Seattle and Tacoma seem to be racing to see which one can go bankrupt first.
Some of the largest container ships can only go into certain ports like Long Beach because of the depth that they require.
Keep in mind that every container on these vessels is sold based on the least expensive freight to deliver the product in that container to someplace in the USA.
My company buys LVP flooring made in China. If the final destination of that container is going to Salem, OR it is cost prohibitive to send that container to Newark, NJ and then truck it back to the west coast.
We also sell a lot of European lumber that comes into the east coast ports of the USA. Very little ends up going to the west coast. That is because is is much cheaper container freight from Hamburg, Germany to Baltimore or even Houston than it is to Seattle.
The other main reason WHY the largest container ships go to Long Beach, LA and Seattle is that they can not fit through the Panama Canal. They are too wide.
They are stopping Chinese imports, good for them.
