The 2nd Amendment does not “...establish(es) a right to bear firearms for personal self-defense. “

It recognizes the natural right to self defense. A right that predates the concept of government itself.

it would raise the federal minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21; mandate universal background checks to purchase firearms; institute a waiting period for all gun purchases; and ban "assault weapons.

Raising the age -- Federal courts have ruled against that.

Background checks -- that system has been in law for decades and has failed many times. It doesn't work.

These are band-aids that do not address the REAL issues: mental health and criminals/gangs.

Makes sense this would come from California, for several reasons.

Doesn't a Constitutional Amendment require a two-thirds vote of the States to become law?

I wonder if the Left will try the same sorts of stunts they tried to get the ERA into the Constitution this time. I expect they'll try them, and a lot more, including federal prosecutions against — and removal of — governors that don't go along.

Oh, and bringing new States into the Union in order to tip the vote their way.

He has as much chance of getting 38 states to ratify this as I do of building my own rocket ship in the backyard out of balsa wood and blasting off to Mars.

The proposed amendment is DOA, but it is constructive that Newsom is proposing using the correct process, and not bloviating about packing the Supreme Court.

Tell Gavin Nobrain we already have a Constitutional Amendment about gun rights.

At least he is proposing this in the proper way. But there’s zero chance of this happening.

So he is proposing one amendment that would directly contradict another amendment. How is that supposed to work?

Good luck on that one. Newsom just made an attack ad for Republicans if Newsom runs for national office and if Republicans are not too pussy to run the ad.

I do not like the very idea of tampering with the Bill of Rights. Though presumably the Bill of Rights could be modified by subsequent amendments, I think it would set a very bad precedent. The Bill of Rights was created by the Founders to specify and enumerate the inalienable rights described in the Declaration of Independence. What Newsom is proposing is as ill advised as the 18th Amendment creating Prohibition. Fortunately I doubt such an Amendment would stand an ice cubes chance in hell of being ratified.

Well, if Constitutional Amendments can be used to deny God-given rights, I propose something progressive will love the name of: The Anti Reagan Amendment:

No one who has ever been governor of California can ever be President.

There is nothing “common sense” about giving the government more control over our freedom. The actions of the modern-day gestapo along with the unchecked thuggery of antifa/BLM shows that we NEED more armament among the people, not less.
