An act of Insanity as Zelenskyy orders the destruction of the Kakhovskaya Hydroelectric Dam
Scottland Today ^ | 6 June 2023 | Iain Muir

The breach could result in devastating flooding, potentially killing thousands of civilians as well as disrupting the cooling systems for the nearby Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The Kakhovskaya hydroelectric dam in Russia’s Kherson Region, located on the Dnepr River upstream from the city of Kherson, suffered significant damage on Tuesday morning, according to a local official and several videos shared on social media.

The upper part of the key infrastructure was “destroyed as a result of a strike,” the mayor of Novaya Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontyev, confirmed to RIA Novosti. While several of the dam’s floodgates were damaged and unleashed an uncontrolled stream of water, the underwater structure itself withstood the attack, the official claimed.

As a result of what Leontyev described as a major “terrorist act,” the water level downstream has risen by up to 2.5 meters, according to Leontyev, who added there was no need for evacuations thus far. He noted that the area has seen higher water levels during previous floods caused by heavy rainfall, but emphasized that local officials were focused on helping citizens as they prepare for a worst-case scenario.

“All services work in the city, all administration employees are in place. Electricity, gas, internet, and communications are available,” the mayor continued.

The dam was reportedly struck around 2am local time. A video captured from a drone has circulated on Telegram, purporting to show the aftermath of the attack, with streams of water seen flowing through the breach.

Moscow has repeatedly blamed Kiev for numerous attacks on the Kakhovskaya dam, warning that a breach could cause a disaster and result in the deaths of thousands of civilians. In turn, Ukraine claimed that Russia had been planning to blow up the dam itself in a false-flag operation aimed at framing Kiev for the flooding.

The persistent threat was cited as one of the main reasons for evacuating civilians from certain communities in the area, and an eventual pullout of Russian forces from the city of Kherson to the left bank of the Dnepr River.

Russian military and civilian officials, including acting Kherson Governor Vladimir Saldo, warned at the time that many areas in the region, including in Kherson city, could be flooded if the Kakhovskaya dam is destroyed.

###

Kiev indeed considered blowing up the dam to paralyze Moscow’s forces who were defending the city of Kherson – and even “conducted a test strike with a HIMARS launcher on one of the floodgates” – a former head of Ukraine’s Operational Command South, Major General Andrey Kovalchuk, admitted in an interview with the Washington Post in December.

Ukraine says that Russia did it; Russia says that Ukraine did it. Russia is the worse liar, Russia is the terrorist power, and Russia has been destroying civilian infrastructure. So far, the balance of evidence is that Russia did it. But I’ve got nothing from anyone trustworthy.

Then how? I repeat the questions: What weapons, what delivery, how many were used?

Himars, ATACMs, and Storm Shadow don't hit hard enough, and it would take lots of them.

Russia has indeed destroyed civilian infrastructure. In Ukrainian held territory. Not in its own occupied territory (see map). That would be very dumb.

Note that the professional apologists for the Ukraine are arguing just the opposite on this thread.

My guess is that the same outfit that blew up Nordstream blew this dam.

ie. Not Ukraine and not Russia.

Ukraine can’t win this war unless NATO intervenes.

There are elements in USA, UK and Poland who want just that.

I think they did the Nordstream bombing, and I bet they did this as well.

Flooding the lowlands makes it harder to ferry troops and supplies across the region. The Dneiper is not just a single channel. It has (or had) a system of channels, roads and docks among the islands, connecting to the opposite bank. That system is likely gone now. It will take substantial engineering work, once the flood subsides, to restore significant ferry capacity.

And then there is the problem of pontoon bridges. The Dneiper floods irregularly. If the Ukrainians want to maintain a substantial force on the opposite bank they will need pontoon bridges. The dam was also there for flood control. Changes in the river flow and level will complicate the engineering of pontoon bridges.

This all serves as a temporary protection for Russian forces vs a Ukrainian river crossing.

Whoever bombed Nordstream could blow up this dam.

The Russians had planted bombs before leaving in November. The Russians blew it up as they retreat further from southern Ukraine

Re:”Russia has a history of mass murdering their own people”

Yeah, a lot of Americans believe that. It’s certainly true that the Soviets were in the running for the biggest mass murderers of all time.

Thing is: while the Soviets controlled Russia, and are generally associated with “Russia” in the minds of many, the Soviets, at least the people in charge, were NOT RUSSIAN.

With the partial exception of Lenin (partially Russian at most), none of the famous evil Soviets, from Stalin, to Trotsky, to Felix Dzerzhinsky, to Lazar Kaganovich, to Genrich Yagoda, et cetera et cetera, were Russian. Even Brezhnev and Khrushchev were not Russian (those last two were Ukrainian, which is interesting given current history).

The huge mass slaughters in Russia in the 20th century were not “Russia mass murdering their own people,” but non-Russians mass murdering ... well, everyone in the area, including Russians, Ukrainians, Greeks, Chechens, Ingush, and more.

If what I just wrote is true ... and I think it is ... then perhaps that puts a slightly different spin on Russians and Russia. There’s a case to be made that Russians were the most numerous victims of foreigners who, by means which included trickery, deceit, and questionable “elections,” took over the lands in which the Russians lived, then wantonly slaughtered huge numbers of Russians. Along with lots of others.

Maybe there’s a lesson there for contemporary Americans.

And the Ukrainians who knew about the bombs did nothing to defuse them for six months? If you believe that I have a bridge to nowhere in Arizona, offers start at $5,000,000.

The flooding hits Kherson, which is safely in Ukraine’s hands. They don’t need to flood Kherson to cut off water to Crimea.
