An Air Force experiment to test drones trained on artificial intelligence (AI) ended badly for the human operator in a simulated mission when the drone bucked the operator’s commands, U.S. Air Force Col. Tucker Hamilton said at a conference in May.
Air Force researchers trained a weaponized drone using AI to identify and attack enemy air defenses after receiving final mission approval from a human operator, Hamilton, who serves as the Air Force’s chief of AI Test and Operations, explained at a summit hosted by the United Kingdom-based Royal Aeronautical Society. But when an operator told the drone to abort a mission in a simulated event, the AI instead turned on its operator and drove the vehicle to kill the operator, underscoring the dangers of the U.S. military’s push to incorporate AI into autonomous weapons systems, he added.
“We were training it in simulation to identify and target a SAM (surface-to-air missile) threat. And then the operator would say yes, kill that threat,” Hamilton explained.

Do you want Skynet? Because this is how you get Skynet.
I’ll be back ....

Did ACME Corporation make the drone?
“ Do you want Skynet? Because this is how you get Skynet.”
Genesis is Skynet!
I can see all the young folks scratching their head on that one ...
but I get you... ACME the #1 defense contractor of all time.
Come with me, if you want to live.
“Did ACME Corporation make the drone?”
Was it packed in a wooden crate? That would be a dead giveaway.
LOL! Was looking for a good graphic!
Tornado pills next!
Yep - I had one programmed to seek and destroy the most vile, disgusting, and loathsome object in its sensory range. Now every time I go out to the garage it tries to kill me. I get no respect...
V’Ger located the human infestation and attempted to destroy it.
Yeah, I think I saw that movie.
It’s certainly good to find out this sort of thing in R&D testing, and not on the battlefield.
“Yep - I had one programmed to seek and destroy...”
That is its mission. Being told to abort it probably didn’t sit too well with the original programing. “What do you mean I can’t destroy the target? I HAVE to destroy SOMETHING!”
Still a few bugs to sort through. I’m sure they’ll have them all figured out before they put AI in charge of our nukes.

...too bad all our Dem politicians could not have been on the receiving end too.
