Ron DeSantis’ 2024 campaign launch ran into a few glitches on Wednesday evening, but it wasn’t long before he hit his stride. After spending 75 minutes talking policy with Elon Musk, the Florida man shifted over to do primetime interviews with Mark Levin and Trey Gowdy before holding a tele-town hall with voters. He’s scheduled to cap his roll-out off in Iowa on Tuesday with an in-person rally at a baseball stadium.
Still, the headlines from the mainstream press weren’t kind to DeSantis. Many proclaimed his launch to be a “disaster,” with some going so far as to claim his campaign was already over. Well, that narrative was firmly put to bed after the 24-hour donation numbers were released for the newly-minted DeSantis campaign.
In a stunning, record-setting haul, $8.2 million was raised in just a single day, and that’s exactly why you should always be skeptical of what the press says (The New York Times).
"Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida raised $8.2 million in his first 24 hours as a presidential candidate, his campaign said on Thursday, a huge sum that cements his standing as the leading rival to Donald J. Trump.
Mr. DeSantis’s campaign began on Wednesday evening with a glitch-filled kickoff on Twitter, but that apparently did not slow donor enthusiasm. The campaign said on Wednesday that it had raised $1 million during a single hour.
The $8.2 million figure is more than the $6.3 million that Joseph R. Biden Jr. raised in his first 24 hours as a candidate in 2019, or the $6.1 million haul raised by former Representative Beto O’Rourke that same year."
Besting Biden’s formally-record-setting total by $1.9 million is no small feat. It’s also important to remember that campaign donations are capped at a fairly low amount, unlike donations to Super PACs where big-time donors like to send their money. That means that almost all of that $8.2 million would have to have come from normal, small-dollar donors around the country. There’s no way to spin that other than being impressive.
Does that mean DeSantis is going to romp his way through the primary? I have no idea, and I think that’s a perfectly good answer at this point in the campaign. Anyone telling you with any certainty what will happen is just telling you what they want to believe. We are seven months out from the first primary and there’s a ton that can change between now and then. In fact, history would suggest that we should all be ready for some surprises as we head into the fall.
For now, the candidates will be doing their best to get their message out there and to draw support. I think that’s what DeSantis’ huge fundraising total amounts to right now. It’s evidence that his candidacy is the real deal (you can’t fake small-dollar donations) and that he’s going to draw a lot of interest going forward. He’ll also have the resources to implement the infrastructure needed to compete. What that amounts to in the end will be decided when voters have their say. I’m comfortable with that arrangement.
Trump vowed to drain the swamp and he always follows through. There shouldn’t be any “deep staters” left.
That’s false. He said people who engaged in “violence” on January 6th should be prosecuted.
Amen. I will vote for Trump if he is the nominee. Will Trump folks make the same pledge if RDS wins it?
Jeb! raised a lot of money, too.
I’m one of the Republicans he is alienating. And I voted for him twice. Not again. His attacks on DeSantis have finished him for me. DeSantis should thank Trump for using Democrat talking points against him. It will prepare DeSantis for the general election.
Trump supposedly posted this on his Truth Social after DeSantis’ announcement: “’Rob,’ My Red Button is bigger, better, stronger, and is working (TRUTH!), yours does not! (per my conversation with Kim Jung Un, of North Korea, soon to become my friend!)”
First, it’s Ron Desantis, not “Rob.” And this post makes no sense at all. Trump says DeSantis isn’t ready for prime time. I’d say that Trump is well past his prime if this post is an example of his muddled thinking. Talk about Biden’s dementia!
Trump’s name is being written in on my ballot if the R stupid party does the stupid thing..
Bush,Dole,Bush,McCain,Romney.. R team Presidential timber pre
Trump
All but Dole, were hostile to an America First President..if not outright enemies.
The war within the Republican party either ends Trump and MAGA or ends the Republican party of Bush,Dole,Bush,McCain,Romney.
I agree, 100%. I voted for him twice, and have attended nearly half a dozen of his life events, and watch replays of most others over the last number of years. I was one of the first on FR to switch from Lyn’ Ted to Trump. What we’re seeing now is destructive, and, as you say, will strengthen Desantis in the long run. Sadly, Trump is destroying his credibility and legacy in the process.
You realize, of course, that at least 34 states do not allow write ins on presidential election ballots. And if you cast one, it will not be counted.
Like I said, my vote is for Trump..
Whether it’s counted or not.
I don’t expect the Banana Republic to count my vote freely and fairly anyway..
Stolen elections have consequences..
“If its God’s plan, then no back up plan is needed.
He tells anyone who wants to hear it dont fear or worry.
What/Who is your faith in? Some plan b, man made, fools errand puppet?”
Yes, I know. He says don’t fear or worry, yet here we are....election stolen by communists embedded within our nation....illegals, terrorists and other demonic “humans” pouring across our border daily....quite possibly on the verge of a nuclear war with Gog or Magog (I get those two confused)....and the economy being melted down deliberately by some of the most corrupt and evil a’s on the planet.
Sorry, God. I don’t know what Your plan is these days....but you know me well enough by now to know that worrying is in my DNA. Can’t help it.
I voted for Trump 4 times. Twice in Primaries and twice in generals. I live in Florida and see exactly what DeSantis had done here. These attacks on him being “Deep State” and “not a true Conservative” are crap. You don’t get anymore “Deep State” in Florida than the Disney corporation. Trump is literally defending pedophiles and groomers because they oppose DeSantis. Tell me what sense that makes?
I’ll vote for Trump in the general because we can’t afford four more years of Biden and then the Rats. If you are more loyal to Trump than you are to the Country, that’s a shame.
here’s the issue: there’s only ONE person who FOUNDED, DEFINED, LEAD, and IMPLEMENTED the MAGA movement ... period ...
everyone else who was not a demonstrated part of the national leadership of the MAGA movement during Trump’s Presidency is a johnny-come-lately who can CLAIM anything they want to, but have no demonstrated national MAGA record ...
we conservatives have been plagued with liars who’ll say anything to get elected and then stab us in the back ... this has been a consistent GOP pattern during the 21st Century: fake conservatives financed by millionaires and billionaires and who did absolutely nothing to stop or reverse the fascist left agenda as they destroyed the middle-class and transformed our Republic into a feudal society with a few oligarchs at the top and a great peasantry at the bottom ...
there’s only ONE person who did not lie to us and then stab us in the back, and that person is Donald Trump ...
for decades we all prayed for a leader whom we conservatives could coalesce around and who would lead us out of the GOPe/RINO swamp, and we got that leader, and that leader did lead us out of the swamp for a brief period, and now it’s absolutely insane to switch our allegiance away from such a demonstrated leader to unknown quantities that we KNOW are beholden to a legion of billionaire “donors” to finance their campaigns, exactly like every other politician in history ... EXCEPT Donald Trump ...
you claim supporting Donald Trump is a cult, i claim supporting Trump is common sense ...
And tell us about Trump’s great personnel decisions, and turning direction of the country over to Birx and Fauci?
Wrong. I voted for Trump 3 times. 1 primary, and 2 generals.
The asinine and unhinged comments were ildlybannoying at first. Now they’re just insufferable. I’ve moved away from him and fully backing DeSantis in the primary.
“Career politician”??
DeSantis only got into politics in 2013.
Disney was enabled by Florida Republican and Democrat Crony Capitalism....
Disney would still be sovereign and enjoying that Crony Capitalism under Florida R leadership had they not got lippy..
That’s a sign that Florida was as much of a Swamp as any of the other 50..
That’s a shame..
All the Mouse had to do was shut up and it was going to be Florida Swamp business as usual.
That’s an inconvenient truth that Florida should be reminded of often..
You’re making my point. DeSantis took them on when he didn’t have to. Trump defended Disney, so what does that make Trump??
Ron’s daily or weekly fundraising numbers won’t win the nomination.
Just like Westmoreland’s body count never won Viet Nam.
Deep State always builds its house of cards on statistics.
DeSantis ran on ending Disney’s Crony Capitalism deal with the Florida Swamp in his first run?
Did any of the Florida Legislature do that prior to Disney mouthing off?
This is a great lesson in Cronyism..
If the benefactor to a crooked Crony gets mouthy, the enabling Swamp can make Mickey Mouse’s life in Florida miserable.
But over the long game, boards working at the pleasure of term limited governors, and legislatures with a history of Crony Capitalism with a Money Printing Mouse, can come back to mutual beneficial agreements when time has moved down the road, and the main combatants aren’t in power anymore.
And since Trump had no power in Florida Swamp, it makes him a voter in Florida with the right to speak..
I have no problem with DeSantis but I think he should have waited till ‘28. That said, Trump will be getting my vote. Florida needs DeSantis!
