DeSantis Puts 'Failure to Launch' Narrative to Bed With Stunning 24-Hour Haul

Ron DeSantis’ 2024 campaign launch ran into a few glitches on Wednesday evening, but it wasn’t long before he hit his stride. After spending 75 minutes talking policy with Elon Musk, the Florida man shifted over to do primetime interviews with Mark Levin and Trey Gowdy before holding a tele-town hall with voters. He’s scheduled to cap his roll-out off in Iowa on Tuesday with an in-person rally at a baseball stadium.

Still, the headlines from the mainstream press weren’t kind to DeSantis. Many proclaimed his launch to be a “disaster,” with some going so far as to claim his campaign was already over. Well, that narrative was firmly put to bed after the 24-hour donation numbers were released for the newly-minted DeSantis campaign.

In a stunning, record-setting haul, $8.2 million was raised in just a single day, and that’s exactly why you should always be skeptical of what the press says (The New York Times).

"Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida raised $8.2 million in his first 24 hours as a presidential candidate, his campaign said on Thursday, a huge sum that cements his standing as the leading rival to Donald J. Trump.

Mr. DeSantis’s campaign began on Wednesday evening with a glitch-filled kickoff on Twitter, but that apparently did not slow donor enthusiasm. The campaign said on Wednesday that it had raised $1 million during a single hour.

The $8.2 million figure is more than the $6.3 million that Joseph R. Biden Jr. raised in his first 24 hours as a candidate in 2019, or the $6.1 million haul raised by former Representative Beto O’Rourke that same year."

Besting Biden’s formally-record-setting total by $1.9 million is no small feat. It’s also important to remember that campaign donations are capped at a fairly low amount, unlike donations to Super PACs where big-time donors like to send their money. That means that almost all of that $8.2 million would have to have come from normal, small-dollar donors around the country. There’s no way to spin that other than being impressive.

Does that mean DeSantis is going to romp his way through the primary? I have no idea, and I think that’s a perfectly good answer at this point in the campaign. Anyone telling you with any certainty what will happen is just telling you what they want to believe. We are seven months out from the first primary and there’s a ton that can change between now and then. In fact, history would suggest that we should all be ready for some surprises as we head into the fall.

For now, the candidates will be doing their best to get their message out there and to draw support. I think that’s what DeSantis’ huge fundraising total amounts to right now. It’s evidence that his candidacy is the real deal (you can’t fake small-dollar donations) and that he’s going to draw a lot of interest going forward. He’ll also have the resources to implement the infrastructure needed to compete. What that amounts to in the end will be decided when voters have their say. I’m comfortable with that arrangement.

True but this was not PAC money. It was small donor money. Impressive amount regardless of spin on here.

Oh his rich friends got huge tax breaks that were permanent. Then he said, “Opps. We need to give the middle class a break. Let’s give them a crumb with a sunset of 2026.”

Where is it coming from? That’s what’s important.

DeSantis has not even had a rally yet, and it's now being suggested the size of rallies don't matter. How sad is this? This is like Jeb Bush all over again.

Ron was scheduled to have a kickoff event in his hometown in Florida next week---

Talk about sad ---- His campaign has cancelled the event.

He may be taking a page from the Biden 2020 campaign, but, because of the high water table in FL, they’re aren’t many basements.

I was interested in this. Ordinarily I would shrug it off, but under current circumstances if a person wants to claim the opposite, they best be prepared.

I wish my two favourite potus candidates weren’t on such a collision course. Gonna get ugly.

Agreed. It's silly season again at FR. Will be worse than Ford vs Chevy/Yook slavs vs Russ slavs/1911 vs Glock/Country vs Rock...

I stand by the prediction that we will unify next August or so behind whomever has won the primaries. I still think Trump will win bigly.

I don't trust Trump to make good hiring decisions anymore, but I don't trust DeSantis given whom he's surrounding himself with either.

Still lightyears better than a demoncrap.

I don’t think DeSantis told Trump anything of the kind. Trump heard it through the political grapevine longer ago than people may think.

I thought it was clever - Trump gets his donations from grass-roots donors - any bets who was behind Ron’s haul?

Threads like this, which even mention Ron DeSantis in a positive light, bring out the DU-contingent here at FR. By their rabid temperament and childish insults do we know them. It's almost fun to watch. Almost.

That said, I have mixed feelings about DeSantis throwing his hat into the ring. I'm not surprised, but I find the work he has done here in Florida to be without peer and would love it to continue.

Donald Trump has gotten my vote twice already, and will again should he be the Republican nominee. Trump says he's ready for a fight, and if by some miracle the DNC vote-fraud machine doesn't work as well as it has been in 2020 and 2022 and he actually regains the Presidency, he is going to get one. The Deep State will only continue to ratchet up its subversion tactics, agitprop, character assassination and calls to violent uprising. But Donald Trump says he's ready to go and I can only hope by now that he is fully aware of what he is up against. They will kill him if they can get away with it.

"Trump didn't need to lift a finger, it crashed all by itself. "

Well, to be honest, almost a million people trying to log in all at once helped a bit.

And while I'm surprised that Twitter wasn't properly prepared for this, is is indicative of the level of interest Ron DeSantis has generated.

Once again, we let Democrats, the media and Trump define the terms of the debate... and the next day, when it turns out they were lying, we’ve already lost the argument.

Another great post by Joe Bower. He’s one of the best here, or anywhere, no doubt.

And I felt exactly like Joe does now, back in Jan/Feb of this year. Since then, I’ve seen an ugly side of Trump that makes we wonder if there’s ever going to be anything good ever come from him again. Yes, he’s been unfairly persecuted in many ways, but in many others, he’s made this bed himself, and I don’t trust him one iota on some of our biggest issues like budget control, vax injections and the homo/trans agenda.

That doesn’t mean I won’t vote for him if I am faced with the choice of either him or Biden (with Harris waiting in the wings as VP), but my expectations and enthusiasm for him are at McCain/Romney like levels at this point. It’s so bad that if RFK Jr somehow got the D nomination, I’d probably at least investigate the option, and I’ve never voted for a D before in my life (and probably never will, so sitting out is an option as well). But if Trump still can’t see the need to fire Chris Wray, as he admitted to Sean Hannity a couple of weeks ago, for example, what real difference is there anyway.

He’s trying to appeal to younger conservatives. Baby Boomers are dying off, and they were a big part of the Republican constituency. My Millenial children admire Elon Musk’s accomplishments.

DeSantis is thinking about the future while Trump is still wallowing in 2020.

These are small individual contributions, not big donors as the article clearly states.

“I think...” And that’s the problem. You are emoting based on pre-conceived ideas about DeSantis instead of educating yourself. The article says otherwise. This was from small donors. Why do Trump followers keep lying even once they’re proven wrong?

If you have to lie about the other guy to promote your guy maybe there’s a problem with your guy.
