Three of Vladimir Putin’s top hypersonic scientists have been detained on suspicion of high treason – after Ukraine claimed to have shot down a volley of ‘undefeatable’ missiles.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the eminent academics, Anatoly Maslov, Alexander Shiplyuk and Valery Zvegintsev, all face ‘very serious accusations’.
The trio have all worked on the weapons for years and were among the authors of a book chapter entitled ‘Hypersonic Short-Duration Facilities for Aerodynamic Research at ITAM, Russia’.
Putin has long boasted that Russia is the global leader in hypersonic missiles and unveiled his ‘Kinzhal’ rockets in 2018, hailing them as ‘undefeatable’ by any present or future defence systems.
But he faced fresh humiliation on Tuesday when Ukraine said it had destroyed six of them in a single night.
The arrests have spread alarm through Russia’s scientific community.
Colleagues of the three men published an open letter protesting their innocence and warning the prosecutions posed serious risk to Russian science.

Hypersonic = NOT Hypersonic
Every weapon ever made is eventually defeated.
This has been true since man picked up a stick.
No need to arrest people over that.
Oh, we thought you said ‘HyPOsonic’, comrade....................
No offense, but a hypersonic missile in flight can suffer catastrophic in-flight break-up from turbulence alone. The air is thick and bumpy at low altitudes.
Russian missile took out our best - the Patriot. Look at this not just as the Patriot battery defeated, but at the cost going out the window. How many millions of dollars out the window?? and the cost of how many American lives???

The Kinzhal is alleged to hit a top speed of Mach 10.
It’s an Iskander-M ballistic missile that has been modified and has a top speed of Mach 6 to 7. It can go that speed because it has a ballistic flight regime.
Yes but the leaders of Tsar Pooteens dumbthug camp can’t build their own weapons.
Stalin imprisoned the Engineers who built his fighter aircraft. They and their children literally lived in the factory that built those planes, and then built rockets in the ‘50s. They did the minimum possible to appease the ape.
There’s a reason their equipment is crap.
And Communists always do this because that’s who they are: the morons who see what others have by creating, collaborating and building...but they don’t know how, except to steal it. At the point of a gun.
Here in the formerly United States they’re called “the Democrat Party”, soon to be “The Party”.
“But he faced fresh humiliation on Tuesday when Ukraine said it had destroyed six of them in a single night.”
This false claim by Ukraine has already been disproven. Metro UK needs to update its propaganda to stay current or risk becoming a laughingstock. Oops wait it’s already too late for that, they’ve lost their credibility a long time ago.
Propaganda!
And a high-powered laser that hits one of these missiles can induce turbulence that will break up the missile. So can a precisely timed wall of flack pellets. Or even a blast wave from a near miss of a counter-missile.
There is no such thing as an invulnerable super-weapon. There is always a countermeasure. The key point is to have that item close at hand when it is needed.
Too late.
Here are a couple they missed that day. Oops. It doesn’t really jive with Mockingbird Media.

Russian Kinzhal Missile Strikes US Patriot System in Kiev + the Fundamental Disadvantage West Faces
Update on the conflict in Ukraine for May 17, 2023:
- Russia’s Ministry of Defense and US officials confirm Russian hypersonic Kinzhal missiles successfully targeted US-made Patriot air defense systems;
- Patriot systems launched approximately 30 missiles over 2 minutes, representing tens of millions of dollars of missiles that were already in short supply;
- Despite this, the Western media continues repeating obvious fabrications about Ukraine intercepting “all” incoming missiles and drones. The Patriot system falling victim to a Kinzhal missile despite firing upward to 30 missiles calls into question Ukraine’s previous claims of intercepting a Kinzhal days earlier;
- As Ukraine burns through Western weapons and ammunition, the West continues preparing to transfer other weapon systems including warplanes;
- European nations are preparing a “coalition” to purchase and provide F-16 fighters to Ukraine;
- F-16 warplanes have no specific capability beyond the aircraft that made up Ukraine’s original air force which is now mostly destroyed;
Kinzhal stronk!
Patriot Missiles Won’t Save Ukraine - National Interest - May 9, 2023
Patriot systems are limited to pinpoint defense of major assets and are designed to operate in tandem with air defenses engaging targets at higher and lower altitudes. Without these additions, Patriot will have too many threats to engage and the result will either be porous coverage that doesn’t protect its defended assets, or coverage that quickly subsides when Patriot runs out of interceptors. Moreover, Patriot systems are themselves vulnerable. Operating a Patriot radar system gives away its location, making it an open target for Russian attacks. This means that Patriot is not a one-stop-shop for defending Ukraine’s military assets or its people.
Those facts were proven last night.

⚡️I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but after careful review of this video, it appears that the air defence battery (most likely patriot) tried to save itself, but failed. It most probably got toasted.
Those were expensive two minutes for the 'West':

I counted 30 Patriot PAC-3 MSE launches here.
The FY2024 costs of these per missile is about $$5,275,000
That was $158,250,000 fired in about two minutes. And as we see, the battery or something else likely got blown up. So it failed in its mission.
Kinzhal stronk like bull!
While worthwhile to test the Patriot missile system against hypersonic missiles, they would be better served doing that out in the desert instead of against live weapons that obliterate the test bed.
Seeing how many rounds the Patriot system fired, the operators were likely firing all the missiles knowing they were going to get blown up on the ground anyway.
One questions whether the Patriot operators were U.S. military or ex-U.S. military working for a contractor.
The problem for Russia is that the Kinzhals weren’t shot down by Patriots. They were shot down manually by the Ukrainians. That’s why Putin’s having his current temper tantrum. His hypersonic missiles aren’t hypersonic.
Metro UK is a tittie site, so hard to take it seriously. Would be nice to actually know what really happened. Even on FR, the opinions are either A or 180 degrees of A.
