One in four fourth-graders in Germany cannot read properly post-lockdown, international research has shown.
Data published as part of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) has found that one in four fourth graders in Germany cannot read properly as of 2021.
The data has contributed to fears that the country’s prolonged COVID lockdown has badly damaged a generation of children, with the country’s government warning that nearly three-quarters of children in the country have been left with mental health difficulties as a result of COVID restrictions.

Promote them to the fifth grade. Problem solved.
Maybe not spend so much time on "gender" and "green" and actually read stuff about people. I'm a great believer in bios. Also find poetry a good step...cuz it's usually in rhyme so a duel learning aid.
I was reading high school level books in 2nd grade. Damn nuns:)
How many of them are immigrants?
And in the US it is only 35% of 4th graders who are reading at or above grade level, which itself is a pathetically low standard.
A good portion of that ‘1/4 of students’ were just carried over the southern border from a country speaking no English.
Betcha they can tell you all about sex, racism/white privilege.
Schools need to require entrance exams.
Not for nothing, but the lockdowns can only be blamed somewhat. These kids have parents. Has anyone asked the parents why their kids are behind?
If the parents can’t read or don’t care, then being in school would only help a few of them.
They’re still far ahead of Baltimore’s students.
Our daughter’s 2nd grade teacher was fired because too many of her students that year were reading on a high school level. Can you believe that?!? Of course, we can all believe it. How dare she let those kids go to the library to read on their level while she stayed in the classroom to give the slower readers more help. The lesbian principal (with her live-in girlfriend elementary coach) just couldn’t let that happen.
Just so happened that group of kids had involved parents who had previously enrolled their kids in the church’s little pre-school a couple mornings a week. With one exception, they graduated from HS with honors. There they were, Valedictorian, Salutatorian, NHS, all lined up on stage just like they were when they were little. Goes to show what a good foundation can do.
But this was happening before the lockdown so you can not place all the blame there.
And yet, some how, in the past, despite parents not being able to read and not caring, the vast majority of children learned to read.
And that was with going to school only three months a year.
Think maybe it is because the teachers can't read and don't care?
Oh good heavens no. It can not be the teachers, it is the parents, the culture, kids not getting enough sleep, or some other stupid excuse but never the fat, over paid, under educated, blue haired teachers.
I retired 10 years ago this June.During the school closure I went to my grand nieces house and helped her out during the total school closure. That was most of April and May of 2020. By June they began to have live school but on the computer. She did quite well and was reading well above her grade level. Still getting A’s in that and English. She is really struggling in math.
On the positive side, 100% of fourth graders can name 15 preferred positions in perverted LGBT sex...
The parents who committed them to the government indoctrination asylums can feel soooo proud...
