Incorrect - the TITAN I were designed a contingency in case the ATLAS missile failed They were replaced in 1965 along with the ATLAS ICBM by next generation missiles - solid fuel MINUTEMAN and TITAN II which used storable fuel vs liquid oxygen of earlier models

INCORRECT - as stated the missile in question were JUPITER IRBM The JUPITER were designed by Von Braum and his team as follow on to the REDSTONE
Also the Cuban Missile Crisis took place in October 1962 not 1961

In the 1990s when Russia was at its weakest, Cuba on its own, we had ample opportunity to free those people. Even now Russia would not start a nuclear war over Cuba, particularly with their bloody nose in Ukraine. Asking Biden to free Cuba is like asking the sun to set in the east however.

I was stationed in Turkey shortly after the missile crisis.
The United States had, if I remember correctly, Titan missiles in Turkey before Russia attempted to put missiles in Cuba. While Kennedy took credit for a big win and the press never covered the whole story the U.S. agreed to pull their missiles out of Turkey. The U.S. also agreed not to invade Cuba. An that is the rest of the story.
Khrushchev diffused that situation, not Kennedy.
You are correct.. thanks for the update. There was a book I read for ‘Foreign Affairs’ in college called ‘Pragmatism and Idealism in Foreign Policy.’ It also identified Titans as the missiles that JFK removed... that was the origin of my post. I suspect when one error is made like that it creates more errors down the line. The misdating is a howler.
In addition to the long range missile Soviets had installed some 80 FKR cruise missiles with 14 KT warhead (Hiroshima size) and range of 90 miles (150 km)
These were unknown to US intelligence and had been launched would have totally destroyed any US invasion force

So JFK who stood down the Russians and risked WW3,
warned everyone to never again do what he had just done.
