Calculus was mandatory during high school?
We also had toys like that little red cash register.
We were waaaaay ahead of you.
I have long advocated for a mandatory year of basic economics before one can drop out of school or graduate.
The source material should be from Thomas Sowell, Milton Friedman. Ludwig von Mises, etc.
Yes, and it was awful and boring back then. Many schools still require it using a boring and awful official curriculum.
This particular class is popular because it’s new and I bet Peng is a gifted teacher using his own materials.
Once the state requires it and provides their chosen and assigned curriculum, it will be boring and awful.
That’s a great dad you had — and hopefully still have.
Typing is a skill that served me my entire life. I guess I should say “keyboarding” so I don’t sound my age.
Without a doubt, knowing how to apply advanced mathematics to personal finance is an advantage, and at the same time, the most important skill is personal responsibility. I once was married to someone who excelled in advanced mathematics and earned a high salary, but he always had so much debt. I didn’t go far in math, but I budget every penny.
It’s a personality difference. Some people want everything now. Life is short, and they want to enjoy it. So, I understand why they buy now and pay later. Meanwhile, other people, like myself, worry more about money. We will lose sleep over a bill. We avoid debt at all costs. Opposite extremes.
i never had a class like that in high school and i graduated in 1973.
A friend’s 16 year old high school son had to rewrite a paper because his teacher couldn’t read cursive. He offered to teach her. She was not amused.
“My question - why did we ever stop teaching this? Was mandatory for me back in the day.”
My question as well. We had the basic “checkbook” and “household budgeting” classes in either home economics or 9th grade business class. And all students were required to take one class or the other during their four years in high school.
By the interest in the class you can tell some of the students are thirsty for basic knowledge and education. Education that most schools are not supplying.
The last time I made use of my times tables...well...never...
Knowing how fractions work is pretty important in algebra and other more advanced math courses. I’ve used it a lot, but then I’ve occasionally been teaching math. Mechanics and carpenters also find knowledge of fractions useful.
But, I do get your point. We also had to learn how many pecks were in a bushel and other bits of math that are now obsolete in the modern day.
On the other hand when I first started teaching in the late 60s, ‘Modern Math’ was the fad. I had to try and teach poor 4th and 5th graders how to calculate in base 6. The NCTM thought this would get kids to see patterns in the math they would use every day. They didn’t.
I watch “This Old House” on Pluto tv and the guys use math all the time to figure everything.
The Man writing the article is stupid enough to keep his son in public high school even after his son said he was not learning anything.
Total stupidity
Not anymore. It is now a school with a forced diverse population. Getting into ivys not hard from that school if you are at the correct melanin level
Putting the same skills that other kids put into sports stats to work in a much more lucrative way. Smart
Democrats need voters who need them, that’s why.
