How Warren Buffett Came to Refuse Progressive Orthodoxy
NYTimes ^ | 05/02/2023

Warren Buffett has long been known as a liberal executive. The Omaha billionaire has contributed millions to pro-choice organizations, he has raised money for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and he often calls for higher taxes on the wealthy.

Mr. Buffett’s recent annual letter to shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate he has run for 58 years, boasted that Berkshire had paid $32 billion in taxes over the past decade. He said he hoped to pay more in the future: “We owe the country no less,” wrote Mr. Buffett, a Depression-era baby in his 93rd year.

Yet as the Berkshire faithful gather for their annual meeting in Omaha on Saturday, Mr. Buffett is decidedly out of step with the progressive orthodoxy in corporate boardrooms. To Mr. Buffett, boards’ rightful role is, as ever, to serve the shareholders who have risked their capital. Institutional investors such as BlackRock’s Larry Fink have pushed E.S.G. — or environmental, social and governance — investing to turn corporations into agents of progressive change.

Scores of corporations have in the last few years adopted climate and diversity policies. The Business Roundtable, a chief executives group, proclaimed it no longer believed that corporations exist principally to serve shareholders. This is a little like the Communist Party dropping its primary allegiance to workers.

This is a little like the Communist Party dropping its primary allegiance to workers.

That actually happened as well under CRT (i.e. identity group Marxism). Now the allegiance is to whomever fits the "historically marginalized" framework needed for a given piece of consolidation of their power at any moment.

Buffet is big time pro-abort.

That and money are his deities.

“The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and, above all, the durability of that advantage.”

“It’s far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price”

Buffett also used to run around begging the government to increase his taxes. At one point he said his taxes were lower than his secretary’s taxes. That’s a pretty stupid statement to make in the press. He deserves what he gets.

Specifically he said his tax rate was lower than his secretary's tax rate. Of course, he was talking about capital gains tax rate vs income tax rate. And the other detail he didn't broadcast loudly was that his secretary was making a six-figure salary back when only the ultra-wealthy made six-figure salaries. LOL

I hope they don't start taxing Roth IRA's. Life in the 12% tax bracket is nice (thank in part to good tax planning while I'm still working). Even if the Trump tax cuts expire while I'm retired we'll be in the old 15% tax bracket instead of the higher 25% or 28% brackets -- unless they start taxing withdrawals from Roth IRA's.

Actually it was brilliant. Leftist sycophants loved to hear such things from an “Enlightened Capitalist”, while Buffett didn’t actually have to do anything but donate a pittance to Dem politicians to actually keep his rates lower. IF he really felt he should pay more in taxes (and I mean sincerely felt that way), he would just voluntarily donate more of his income, savings, and property to the government.

Buffet is far left and a darling of the left wing. He makes a fortune shipping oil on his trains when oil companies aren’t allowed to build a pipeline to move it. Pipelines are 10X more safe than trains for moving oil
