Deputy U.S. Marshal Matt Westover two years ago submitted a DNA profile to a public registry, the same one that many people use in their family genealogical research.
But the Omaha law enforcement officer wasn’t looking for some long-lost relative — at least not his own.
The DNA profile he submitted in 2020 came from the brother of William Leslie Arnold, the fugitive who killed his parents in Omaha in 1958, buried them in the backyard, nine years later escaped from the Nebraska Penitentiary and vanished without a trace.

Genetic genealogy is really ramping up in law enforcement. If you’re interested in this sort of thing, there’s a fascinating podcast on it called DNA id.
They didn’t use genetics, but the way they caught Oba Chandler in Central Florida was quite amazing. The police had a sample of a few words the killer had scrawled on a small piece of paper which they displayed on a roadside billboard asking if “anyone recognizes this handwriting”.
I used genetic geneology to determine that my father was adopted. No big deal but it answered a few questions.
I don’t get why the JonBenet Ramsey case has not been solved. They did manage to get DNA from her body and yet...nothing.
It sure is suspicious. John Ramsey gave an interview several months ago and in it he said that to this day, the Boulder PD refuses to release evidence to an independent lab for further testing. He even petitioned the Governor to intervene. The Governor did state that further investigations are now being conducted. Who knows for sure though...

Interesting. I didn’t know that.
Thanks for the tip.

Two years ago, the Ancestry DNA turned up someone related to him. It was his sister (also adopted). His sister came to visit in person in December of last year. My friend died from lung cancer on Jan 15, 2023. He and his sister were thrilled to finally meet in person. She knew there was some urgency to visit with the return of the lung cancer. His birthday is two days before mine...same year, so we often shared a birthday party/celebration together.”
Wonderful story. Mine is nothing compared to that.
They say that even if you’re reluctant to upload your dna file to GEDmatch because of privacy, there’s enough data on the 8 million who have to zero in on nearly anyone.
Believe it or not the latest I read was that the DNA they lifted from her body was Asian and they believe it was due to the fact that her clothing was manufactured in China
Yep. From distant cousins you’ve never heard of.
I read that report but there were other areas where DNA was found i.e. under her nails. Not only that, all the clothing, rope, garrot (sp), is still being held by the BPD which imo, is criminal because they refuse to release evidence. With the advances made in DNA technology, those articles can be reexamined.
