Ukraine bans place names connected to Russia

A new law prohibits toponymy related to Russia, its history, culture or personalities

President Vladimir Zelensky has signed legislation eradicating references to Russian history or culture in the names of cities, towns, villages and other geographical locations in Ukraine.

Zelensky approved the so-called “decolonization” law on Friday, according to the website of the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. The legislation was passed by MPs in March and had been in the works since early last year.

The law prohibits “praising, commemorative, propagandist names” relating to the Russian state, its symbols, historic or cultural places, cities, dates, and events. The ban also covers personalities who “committed military aggression against Ukraine and other sovereign countries,” according to the legislation.

The law will come into force three months after its publication, European Solidarity Party MP Vladimir Viatrovich wrote on Facebook. After that, local administrations will have six months to “free the public space from symbols of the ‘Russian world’: dismantle statues and monuments, rename streets and other objects,” he said.

The drive to remove monuments and geographical names associated with Russia and the Soviet Union has been underway in Ukraine since 2015, when a so-called “decommunization” law was adopted in the country.

Since then, the names of more than 900 settlements and some 50,000 streets have been changed, according to data from RIA Novosti news agency.

The process intensified after the start of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine more than a year ago. A statue of Catherine the Great was torn down in Odessa in December, even though the city was founded on the order of the Russian Empress in 1794. Several cities, including Dnepr and Chernovtsy, have removed statues and memorial plaques dedicated to classical Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.

Moscow has denounced such policies, saying that attempts to cancel Russian culture and the “forced Ukrainization” of the country violate international norms and infringe upon the rights of around a quarter of Ukraine’s population, who are Russian-speaking.

How many here will defend this Taliban-like cultural cleansing in Ukraine?

How much longer before the same people running "the liberal world order" push the same agenda here?

“How many here will defend this Taliban-like cultural cleansing in Ukraine?”

How is this any different from Russia changing Polish names and German names to Russian names?

I certainly hope Z-man knows the military importance of assigning proper pronouns to the appropriate perverts.

What places in the Ukraine are not connected with Russia?

You may want to ask your Russian friends about place names.

They made non-Russian names illegal last year.

How did Yongmingcheng become Vladivostok?
Your Chinese friends do not like it.

The Yongmingcheng name will return in a few years without any kinetic action, The Chinese are far smarter than the Russians.

Are you going to go to Ireland and tell them to bring back King and Queen’s Counties?

Are you going to go to Poland and tell them to rename it Danzig?

Are you going to Kaliningrad and telling them to rename it Konigsberg? Actually as Russia collapses this last one might indeed happen.

Erasing history is straight out of the Marxist playbook. Globalists seem fond of it too. Makes it easier to install their new world order.

So? American liberals and sympathizers are doing it here. No more Sqaw Mountain and any monument or fort that has to do with the Confederacy is being town down, moved or renamed. Most without a whimper from those who should oppose.

Righteous move to scrub the place names associated with the invading Muscovite hordes.

Right, it must be because of Marxists, not the fact that Putin invaded Ukraine annexing territory with Russian soldiers robbing, raping, torturing, and executing civilians.

That’s easy:

The United States; Canada; Germany; Poland; Portugal; most African countries; Pakistan; Bangladesh; Slovak Republic; Slovenia; Bosnia-Herzogovina; Moldava; Sri Lanka; Oman; Guyana; Belize; Surinam...you get the picture. And those are just some of the current ones.

It depends upon where "here" is.

During the 1st World War, folks in the State of Indiana changed the name of the town of Germany to Pershing.

There are many similar examples in your country, too.

Yup, Russians have taken down all Ukrainian names in occupied areas.

Russia Scrubs Mariupol's Ukraine Identity, Builds on Death

Many of the city’s Ukrainian street names are reverting to Soviet ones, with the Avenue of Peace that cuts through Mariupol to be labeled Lenin Avenue. Even the large sign that announces the name of the city at its entrance has been Russified, repainted with the red, white and blue of the Russian flag and the Russian spelling.

Eight months after Mariupol fell into Russian hands, Russia is eradicating all vestiges of Ukraine from it – along with the evidence of war crimes buried in its buildings, such as the famed Drama Theater where demolition started Thursday. The few open schools teach a Russian curriculum, phone and television networks are Russian, the Ukrainian currency is dying out, and Mariupol is now in the Moscow time zone. On the ruins of the old Mariupol, a new Russian city is rising, with materials from at least one European company, The Associated Press found.
