Facing brutal climate math, US bets billions on direct air capture

(Reuters) - The world is failing to cut carbon emissions fast enough to avoid disastrous climate change, a dawning truth that is giving life to a technology that for years has been marginal – pulling carbon dioxide from the air.

Leading the charge, the U.S. government has offered $3.5 billion in grants to build the factories that will capture and permanently store the gas - the largest such effort globally to help halt climate change through Direct Air Capture (DAC) and expanded a tax credit to $180/tonne to bolster the burgeoning technology.

The sums involved dwarf funding available in other regions, such as Britain which has pledged up to 100 million pounds ($124 million) for DAC research and development. That compares with $12 billion in federal spending to drive demand for personal and commercial electric vehicles, Boston Consulting Group estimated.

While bids for the U.S. DAC hub funding were due on March 13, the government and some companies have yet to fully disclose details about the applications, many of which Reuters is reporting for the first time. The Energy Department expects to announce winning bids this summer.

Worsening climate change and inadequate efforts to cut emissions have thrust the issue known as carbon removal to the top of the agenda, and U.N. scientists now estimate billions of tonnes of carbon will need to be sucked out of the atmosphere annually to reach a goal of capping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.

If they actually wanted to stop pollution why don’t they nuke china?

[Direct Air Capture (DAC)]

Ya know, ya think they can’t possibly get any more stupid than they already have.

And then they prove you incorrect.

The amount of CO2 in the atmosphere was reduced by about 90% during the last 150 million years. If this trend continues CO2 will inevitably fall to levels that threaten the survival of plants, which require a minimum of 150 ppm to survive. 95% of all the CO2 in the atmosphere comes from nature itself, only 5% is created by man. At the current level of 410 PPM, man is only adding approx. 21 PPM of CO2.

You are correct. The other thing they do not talk about is the ocean which is the largest carbon sink on the planet. As the oceans warm it releases carbon dioxide. We are in a warming period due in all probability to the orbital mechanics of the earth and changes in the inclination of the earth. Man has nothing to do with either of these. The Vostok Ice Cores from the Antarctic prove this. The ice traps CO2. They found that CO2 levels in the ice occurred after a warming period and not before.

The Vostok Ice Cores go back 800,000 years. Long before the internal combustion engine and the use of fossil fuels.

This is an outright war on plants by depriving them of CO2. Plants are people too.

The world is failing to cut carbon emissions fast enough to avoid disastrous climate change, a dawning truth

Disastrous climate change is a dawning truth? No, it isn't.

It's the opinion of some, not a truth.

A world full of human beings is going to have carbon emissions. Full stop!

Unless you start eliminating human beings, which is abhorrent, you can't change the math.

Concentrate on living with a warmer Earth.

A little secret that apparently is not being factored in - Plants themselves consume oxygen and emit carbon dioxide ALL THE TIME, to support their own life functions. The trick is, that in daylight hours, the effects of sunlight permit the plant to emit MUCH more oxygen and store the carbon as carbohydrates, than it is consuming the oxygen and the stored carbohydrates again and releasing CO2. In darkness the plant goes entirely to oxygen consumption mode.

Consider mushrooms, which perform little or no photosynthesis. And yet they grow in darkness.

Organic matter, in the process of bacterial decomposition, also generates much if not most of the natural background levels of CO2.

Yes; and the “experts” are messing with masses much bigger than their imaginations that dictate life.

So we GO BROKE trying to pull China’s CO2 out of the air.

Sounds like a plan to me!!!

They are not totally stupid. They know what the Third World would do to them if they tried their antics there.

About 3.2% of all CO2 in the atmosphere is man-made. (DOE 2000)

Excellent post!

When they remove carbon, plants die. When enough plants die, we die.

Carbon capture by organics (think forests) is a joke and a scientific travesty of thought. When the tree dies it decomposes via bacterial action and termites. CO2 is released and also methane. The methane rises into the atmosphere and decomposes due to reactions with ozone. It becomes CO2 and H20. Unless an organic is buried and removed from decomposition it does not remove CO2 from the atmosphere on a permanent basis.

We are sequestrating carbon into the ground all the time.

Anything of organic origin is mostly carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen. Your trash is mostly organic (cardboard, food scraps, plastic). And then it goes into a landfill.

TREES capture and convert CO2! I learned that in school! What a bunch of idiots!

A totally ridiculous and stupid scheme. But not quite as bad as the idiot idea of setting up solar panels in orbit around Earth which would generate electricity to power microwave transmitters which would “beam” radio waves to Earth which would convert them back into electricity.
