U.S. military would need conscription to fight China Could not achieve victory using current all-volunteer force

The U.S. military could not achieve victory in a war with China using its current, all-volunteer force, according to one expert.

The United States will thus need to radically transform its force structure to better contend with the emerging threat environment, up to and including by reinstating conscription, said Jonathan Askonas, an assistant professor of Politics at Catholic University of America.

“This is a five-alarm fire,” Askonas said during an April 11 discussion with the Hudson Institute think tank. “We’re facing global threats and we have a force structure which we know will not work against those threats.

“We basically can’t fight a war larger than Iraq with the all-volunteer force.”

The all-volunteer force has been a staple of U.S. military organization since 1973, when the draft was terminated along with the United States’ direct involvement in the Vietnam War.

Unfortunately, Askonas said, the all-volunteer force was proving incapable of generating the number of service members required for a war between great powers, and its burdensome logistical processes were likely to be ineffective in either a conflict with China in the Indo-Pacific theater or supporting European powers against Russia.

Draftees make horrible fighting soldiers. Most wars are fought by a small percentage of their military, most soldiers/sailors/airmen do the logistics of supporting the warfighter.
Even the Russians have this model.
Draftees are and should be keep in the rear with the gear.
That can break when things go bad, but that is the modern model of war.
An overweight out of shape cook is better than no cook.
a female that can’t do the required amount of pull-ups can still drive a truck.
Most standards are there to protect the lives of the soldier, when you get to the point of drafting who cares?
They don’t want to be there and they are not committed to anything but staying alive.

At a personal level, propaganda only works on the vast majority of ordinary people when the cost of being wrong, stupid and/or delusional isn’t perceived to be very high.

Well said!

That little nugget of wisdom says that your "vast majority" has existed for generations. That is, the propaganda has flowed like water from a fire hydrant for all these many years. The masses have been indoctrinated and led like sheep to the slaughter.

Propaganda is the single most issue that is driving us toward armageddon!

Here is a short (very short) list.
-Invade Vietnam because of commies
-WMDs in Iraq
-Trump's Russian collusion
-Absolutely no US election fraud
-Jan 6th was an invasion and direct attack in our capital on our sacred way of life
-Shut down the economy for two weeks to flatten the curve
-The vax shot is 100% safe and effective. Take it and you WILL NOT get COVID
-Only 9.65 years remaining to deal with devastating man-made climate change
-We must promote democracy in Ukraine
-Ukraine is winning the war
-Absolute misinformation and falsehood that the US blew up NordStream
-There's more -- so much more!

Anyway, the intensity has increased to the point that any fool should be able to see through what we are being fed!

“The U.S. military could not achieve victory in a war with China using its current, all-volunteer force, according to one expert.”

The greatest use of nuclear weapons was that we had them and everyone knew it. But after four generations of that threat, anything becomes common since no one really thinks we have the pelotas. They now, also and with our assistance, have enough to destroy the world, just like we do. And they have one major advantage over us, they don’t care who gets lit up because they have a belief that some of them will survive because they have so many. And the thought of a large amount of people in the world that fire will come out of the sky and burn them to a crisp is fairy tale to them. But it is the only way to defeat the enemy now for everyone.

Bang, bang disappeared 80 years ago. And we have “pussed out” so many times during those years that the world thinks we are more a joke than a power. And we got lazy creating the capacity to defend ourselves till we are a pushover by using the sad old nuclear threat in place of building a military that can be a threat using it the right way.

No one has an advantage now. Some nut like North Korea actually launches one and the sound of the poof will be a while reaching Pluto when the dogpile of launches starts. And who will care? There won’t be anyone around to do so or even hear the poof.

Wonder why some thing they would have to or get a chance to fight China.

They own major ports in the U.S. and mass amounts of land in strategic locations all the have to do is plant their arms leave and and flip the switch.

Nothing left for them to do but wait for the dust and radiation to clear.

I am a little stunned, with Joe Biden in their back pocket, they haven’t gone an invaded Taiwan already.

They really don’t need to. Just buy off the billionaires, rig a couple of elections, and follow the Hong Kong model. There is so much cross-strait commerce already that Taiwan’s elites aren’t going to jeopardize their lifestyles by entering a shooting war - no matter how the citizens feel abou it.

and we’ve depleted our arms/ammo since we gave them all to Ukraine to sell on the black market.

“”Draftees make horrible fighting soldiers.””

That is nonsense, WWII from all sides was fought by draftees, the American army of WWII was 93% draftees and did you hear complaining about Marine draftees in Vietnam, Korea, and WWII?

A 19 year old kid is turned into a soldier easily, regardless of whether he wanted to enlist or not as long as the leadership is good.

We had the draft from 1940 to 1973 and many of us would much rather serve in the military of those 33 years.

as a senior NCO in the USAF, my experience dealing with many other services was volunteers were much more professional than draftees.
WWII was a legal war. Constitutionaly authorized. We have not had a legal war since.

I don’t think a war with China would be conventional one involving large armies. What are we going to do? Invade and occupy Chinese territory? No thanks. No way we win that.

But our kids in WWII were sane and patriotic.

“Good luck drafting Americans to go die for an island on the other side of the planet and make the world safe for Gay marriage.”

My kids already have their ticket out. Can’t say that I blame them.

Well, if conscription included teaching civics, and included all 18 year olds, it might not be so bad. And I would suggest that they should include the richest kids first.

That ‘timeline’ has come and gone. Between the overweight teens...the drugged ones, and the ones who’d just plain refuse to accept orders...I doubt if you could draft more 100,000 over a year.

More likely to drag all of those who exited the military in the past decade, and force them back into service.

As Army in combat arms, I couldn’t tell the difference between what got a fellow soldier into the Army, they were all the same as far as I saw or trained.

Unless you checked their dog tags I don’t even know how you would know which soldier or Marine you met had been drafted.

Young guys are not set in their ways and they get into the military and find themselves, the paratroops, Rangers, and Green Berets got their share of volunteers who had originally been drafted.

China has 300 million men they could send over here. The numbers are in their favor.

I suspect if China invaded, half this country would surrender.

“I cannot imagine what would happen if you tried to draft these snowflakes.”

____

It wouldn’t be these snowflakes who would be drafted. They would be exempt. The draft would apply only to young men and women in rural areas of conservative states.

So if there is a land war with China we’ll need conscription? There is no need to fight a land war with China.

It a naval/air war. No ground has to be held.

Third, China has one sort of ally, Russia, and maybe North Korea, but otherwise, it has made a lot of enemies.

Yes. Maybe true. But they have loads of friends, too.

It is also true that all three have nukes and a very effective means of delivery.

How many nuc-tipped hypersonic missiles would it take to knock out a flotilla carrier group?

The answer: ONE!
