The U.S. military could not achieve victory in a war with China using its current, all-volunteer force, according to one expert.
The United States will thus need to radically transform its force structure to better contend with the emerging threat environment, up to and including by reinstating conscription, said Jonathan Askonas, an assistant professor of Politics at Catholic University of America.
“This is a five-alarm fire,” Askonas said during an April 11 discussion with the Hudson Institute think tank. “We’re facing global threats and we have a force structure which we know will not work against those threats.
“We basically can’t fight a war larger than Iraq with the all-volunteer force.”
The all-volunteer force has been a staple of U.S. military organization since 1973, when the draft was terminated along with the United States’ direct involvement in the Vietnam War.
Unfortunately, Askonas said, the all-volunteer force was proving incapable of generating the number of service members required for a war between great powers, and its burdensome logistical processes were likely to be ineffective in either a conflict with China in the Indo-Pacific theater or supporting European powers against Russia.

What if the wsr is on our soil?
No need for conscription
Isn’t the Milley War Machine actively working against WhyPeepo?
Who are they going to conscript?
It doesn’t appear that the US can manufacture the arms and ammunition, supplies, etc. to support a large, conscripted military.
At a personal level, propaganda only works on the vast majority of ordinary people when the cost of being wrong, stupid and/or delusional isn’t perceived to be very high. That’s what “virtue-signaling” is all about … it’s a way for people to pretend they give a sh!t about something without ever putting themselves on the line in any way.
Lets start with “Why would the US want to fight a ground war with China?”.
There are billions of other people in that area that are available for ground combat.
Seize every Chinese owned business, piece of land, and US investment, and their economy would collapse. We did it to Germany. Twice.
They thought much the same thing on December 6, 1941...
I reject a lot of assumptions. To start with, do not expect a “land war” in China (pop 1.4b). American preferences would be an air and naval war. Second, we would not go it alone. The odds shift in our favor if we have some high population allies, such as India (1.4b).
Third, China has one sort of ally, Russia, and maybe North Korea, but otherwise, it has made a lot of enemies.
China also has several possible war objectives. Taiwan is first, but it also has territorial disputes on both land and water. It also has too many vulnerabilities to count.
So what would the objectives of the US be?
Deny China the conquest of Taiwan. Open navigational lanes at sea, which might mean depriving them of their blue water navy, which is small compared to their brown water ships and boats. Killing lots of submarines.
Pretty sure that “gay” and the “transcomms” aren’t openly embraced in the Asian cultures as foisted upon “western” society”. Underground, maybe. Insights? Corrections.
If the next president is also a Democrat/Progressive, it’s just a matter of time when the draft will be re-enacted.
By then, the administration will be bold enough (stupid enough?) to make it happen, without regard to most the youth being phyiscally and emotionally unfit.
The present government is already used to pushing it’s will against popular opinion. This was learned during the Covid ‘epidemic’.
Also don’t dismiss the old saying from the peace movement in the 60’s “What if they gave a war and nobody came”. I doubt that but a tiny percentage of this generation would respond to a call to fight China and I don’t blame them unless the US mainland were actually invaded.
A lot changes in 72 years. 🤔😁👍
‘Draft beer, not students!’
6 illegals in 2+ years of Biden. Seems to have a disproportionate amount of military-aged males in that cohort as well. Neocons can look there.
Its a match made in heaven, or more likely, hell.
We have millions of healthy and fit military age men pouring across our southern border as we speak. They will pick up the slack from the snowflakes.
LOL
The author thinks we are going to have a land war with China.
DOH! I forgot. Just mail them and they’ll come right down.
Overview of What Would Occur if the United States Returned to a Draft:
1. Draft Authorization: Congress and the President
A national emergency, exceeding the Department of Defense’s capability to recruit and retain its total force strength, requires Congress to amend the Military Selective Service Act to authorize the President to induct personnel into the Armed Forces.
2. Activation of Selective Service System
Selective Service activates and orders all personnel to report for duty. Reserve Force Officers, along with selected military retirees, begin to open Area Offices to accept registrant claims. Local, District Appeal, and National Board members are notified to report for refresher training.
Selective Service System
I’ve been saying this for a year now. Just a simple majority vote from our current warmongering Congress reenacts it. The draft is no less popular today than it was the previous times it’s been authorized. Thank goodness, my 17 year old grandson has a severe gluten allergy and a deferment.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure one or both sides would be lobbing nukes, it would be over in hours.
They want this war with China to “unify” us “unite” us “control” us and the list goes on.
