NEW YORK -- The digital media conglomerate Starboard said Friday it purchased the conservative social media site Parler and will temporarily take down the app as it undergoes a “strategic assessment.”
The deal came months after another acquisition agreement with rapper Kanye West, legally known as Ye, collapsed in November.
The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed by either company. Parler said the deal was concluded on April 7.
Parler caters to right-wing, far right and libertarian voices and fashions itself as a platform with fewer rules in support of free speech. It was briefly booted off the internet in 2021 due to its connections to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. And its user base remains small.
Starboard, formerly known as Olympic Media, was founded in 2018 and owns other conservative-leaning news sites. In a news release, Parler called it “the perfect home” for its brand and loyal users.
“The team at Parler has built an exceptional audience and we look forward to integrating that audience across all of our existing platforms.” Starboard CEO Ryan Coyne said in a statement.
Parler also said its CEO George Farmer will step down from his role. He will be replaced by Igor Shalkevich, the company’s chief development officer.

Parler started off OK,
Then became Mostly Useless to Me.
Poorly written. It sounds as if Parlor does not support free speech, because it has "fewer rules" supporting free speech.
Also, they misspelled Parlor.
A woke make over probably.
Its a great marketing tactic - get millions of motivated people to sign up for your app by hyping its conservative bona fides.
In a tech-social media world where company valuation is measured by number of accounts and eyeballs, once you have squeezed that orange to the max - sell the company!
Maybe we all got played.
Parler was good and then totally unraveled. Has been garbage for awhile.

Right Wing app. No bias there. They would never call Facebook or Twitter “left wing” apps.
FU ABC.
What has that got to do with this? I don’t see the connection.
It probably needs its own thread. I didn’t know where to put it and can’t put a lot of finger pecking on this old iPad as it stops working. Pretty lame.
I put the post here as part of the digital discussion.
‘...right-wing app...’
They say it like it’s a bad thing.
Something else altogether.
Probably the verb not the noun.
Yep, I remember distinctly they sold out. The end.
Catch-and-kill or coup de grace?
I didn’t know Parler even still existed until reading an article today at Just the News.
The left did a good job of destroying the site, just as they were getting off the ground. However, the site needed major improvements. I checked it out at the time and it was not user friendly and was hard to navigate. In time it could have improved but the left was swift in vilifying it as an extreme right-wing site that promoted racism and violence.
