The National Fire Protection Association is a globally-recognized nonprofit, and an authoritative source on fire prevention — the organization is often tapped by legislative bodies and administrative states for rules and regulations recommendations. Speaking to the danger of e-bikes, the NFPA writes the following:
Most e-bikes and e-scooters are powered by lithium-ion batteries. This is the same type of battery that powers many of today’s electric vehicles, cell phones, laptops, and power tools. When lithium-ion batteries are damaged, they can overheat, catch on fire, and even lead to explosions. When fires occur, they also tend to burn very hot and can be difficult for firefighters to extinguish.
…
While there are no national or international statistics on how often e-bikes or e-scooters catch on fire, it does happen with some regularity—and the numbers are rising.
As expected, “rising” numbers equate to real human sacrifice. Whether the “green initiatives” support Biden’s pursuit of greenism or the World Economic Forum’s “sustainable solutions” like 15-minute cities, the left’s demands for the temple of climate alarmism afflicts us all — and there’s yet another tragic case to prove it.
On Monday, two Queens children perished in a fire caused by the lithium battery of an e-bike. According to John Hodgens, the chief of New York City’s fire department, and relayed via Yahoo News:
We got here very quickly – and if this was not an e-bike fire, most likely we would’ve been able to put this fire out without incident. But the way these fires occur, it’s like an explosion of fire.

Remember the “consumer rights” fad?
Monday’s fire marks the 59th fire caused by a lithium-ion battery powering a micro-mobility device in New York City this year, Chief Fire Marshal Dan Flynn said. Of those fires, there have been five fatalities.
“Last year we only had six fatalities,” Flynn said. “We’re a little over three months (into 2023), and we’ve had five people killed by these devices.”
God rest these precious children’s souls.
I told you they were death traps
RE: God rest these precious children’s souls.
Amen.
From the greenie point of view, electric vehicles cause fewer children. Never mind the carbon credits.
If these deaths were attributed to a gas powered bike the government would be all over this. Nope, the end justifies the means to the green energy cult. They are pure evil.
From my observation, the e-bikes you frequently see in NYC are home-built, affairs, using 1,000 Watt aftermarket hub drives and cheap Chinese batteries, which the local utes race around on. In this case, the article notes that an aftermarket charger was being used.
Ah, yes, it was all due to not using the “Good Stuff”. From the firefighters’ description, it was the battery, which is virtually inextinguishable, not an overheated electrical connection. Ever see a battery not made in China? There really aren’t any to speak of. And when lithium batteries go up, they go up just like a rocket—burn like a blowtorch until there’s no battery left to burn.
Most reputable e-bike batteries that I am familiar with from my own e-bikes are from the Korean suppliers LG and Samsung. I take it you would be surprised to learn that LG manufactures its lithium batteries in Poland and Clarksville, Tennessee, while Samsung has lithium battery plants in Malaysia and Hungary. The problem with aftermarket chargers is the amperage is not matched to the battery design and there is no automatic shutoff on the charger when the charging is complete, leaving the battery to cook until it fails.
