An analysis of voting records found that some of the most-Republicans states have some of the least-conservative lawmakers...
It seemed like a slam dunk: Wyoming, the most conservative state in the country, was poised to introduce school choice, a policy overwhelmingly supported by conservatives that also enjoys support from most Democratic voters, especially minority ones.
There was no doubt the bill had the votes to pass: Out of the state House’s 62 members, 57 are Republicans. A majority of the chamber was not only supporting the bill, but had co-sponsored it.
Then, it died

As long as the Public Schools keep their football teams, the vast majority of GOP parents will keep sending their kids to those schools and not care what they do to their kids (like Grooming), as long as the schools remain ‘free’.
I suspect that a majority of FReepers (meaning hard-core conservatives) do the same.
Texas legislature is in the process of killing school choice. I know a lot of Texas freepers don’t like Gov. Abbott, but he is way to the right of the average republican in the Texas legislature.
Professional sports was among the worst things to have developed in America. The odds of any child becoming good enough to play a professional sport is like 1/1 million.
Having a football team should be the most minor of considerations when it comes to school. I know for myself, the kid can play a neighbourhood sport but school is school.
Sarah Palin was thoroughly in the school unions’ pocket.
GOPe in key slots can thwart the desires of the majority of the base.
Idaho has a RINO problem, too.
Republicans everywhere, yet they can’t seem to repeal the grocery tax (one example).
Lizard Chenny got elected in Wyo.
‘Rats have to run as RINOs to get elected.
And Lisa Murkowski is in the pockets of all the unions here and now.
Big Business is in bed with Public Education the Chambers of Commerce are the real forces in Republican political ranks.
“overwhelmingly supported by conservatives that also enjoys support from most Democratic voters, especially minority ones.”
The reality is in conservative run states, like Wyoming, the public schools are quite good. There isn’t a lot of demand for alternatives.
That demand comes from Democrat run areas where the schools are a disaster.
In rural areas the school district is often the largest employer, especially of women. This is as true in red as well as blue states.
In small town America the HS sports program is part of the town’s identity & self-image.
Because the gop is the enemy too?
It’s really a shame that nobody really cares about education. The US used to be good enough that everybody could be a rocket scientist.
Sarah Palin is/was overrated.
I really don’t understand that, unless sports have become the alternate to church for many.
Speaker Albert Sommers, a Republican, refused to let the bill come to the floor for a vote, saying in late February that “I am not going to bring that bill out from the Senate that’s identical to the one that already failed in my Education Committee.”
The leaders of legislatures control legislation and get massive $$$$ from special interests to support or kill legislation.
